The Cat and The Mouse
The cats and mice antagonism is an ever-so-known fact. Cats simple cant stand something small and moving... mice just cant stand something big and crouching. Same was for the heroes of this story... a young Mouse once stumbled upon a house and decided to stay there to live, and there was a Cat who tried everything to catch the intruder. But, killing a mouse is not something a house pet does daily, so the Cat had little luck; Mouse always managed to escape, sometimes harmless, sometimes scratched by the Cat, but always alive and not willing to leave a warm, cozy house. The Big House Wars lasted for days, then months... Months is a lot in animal age actually. The Cat got a habit at sleeping near mouse holes, the Mouse used to walking around him over the furniture. Life went on, as it always does, and neither of them could already remember how it was - back then, when Mouse didnt yet found the house of Cat...
Untill one day, suddenly...
The Mouse disappeared. He didnt come out for breakfast, as he didnt for supper or even at night. The Cat kept stalking all the places Mouse used to visit, but there was no trace of new scent around any of those routes. The Mouse didnt appear on the next day either. The Cat wandered around the house restlessly, trying to find the Mouse, but it was no use. Mouse was nowhere to be found.
At the end of the third day, Mouse didnt come back, and the Cat started to feel something unusual, not often found in cats... a growing cold sense of loss. Habit of chasing the Mouse around was so strong that his old toys, that used to enjoy him, now seemed dull and boring. His food seemed tasteless, and birds outside the window was so painfully like a bad joke... The Cat slowly understood, that in those short months, the Mouse has become part of his life. A part that is absent now...
And the Cat did what no other cat would do... He sneaked out, and went on a search to find the Mouse! He was naive house pet after all, and knew life only from TV shows his masters used to watch. He wandered around the back yard a bit, then jumped over the fence and went to the neighbor house. There was no trace of any mice around there. He kept on searching, checking all the nearby houses. Untill finally he caught a weak scent of a mouse. It was coming from one of the basements a little bit down the street. The Cat crawled in and sniffed around.
The Mouse was there, in a cage of a live trap, hungry and scared. He just sat in the corner calmly looking at the Cat as it stepped closer. He was too weak to run, too scared to struggle... the Mouse was ready to just accept his inevadeable fate. The Cat tried the cage's door with his claws, and found out it was a simple guilotine type door, which was much easier to open than, say, bathroom door. He pulled it aside, then up, and slowly, the rusty old door opened. The Mouse couldnt do anything but look at the Cat with scared black eyes. But, the Cat stepped back, and disappeared in the darkness. Soon, his scent vanished completely. Mouse was confused. His old enemy just let him go? Missing a perfect chance to kill him? But, the hunger was too strong, so the Mouse quickly ran off the cage without thinking too long.
The next day the Mouse appered on the Cat's kitchen again, and happy Cat chased him again like good old times. The Big House Wars went on, like there never was a few days break. The Cat knew he liked the Mouse, but his instinct was too strong to just forget about it.
Yet, life is so cruel...
Shortly after the Mouse' resque, the Cat's masters started to pack things. Cat did not suspect anything bad from the start, they used to often go on vacations... untill the furniture started to disappear from the house. First the shelves, then the chaires, then the bed... the Cat felt something was wrong. On the final day, when the last pieces of furniture were out, the master took Cat and out him in a carrying box. It was over. They were moving. Cat meowed and tried to break free, but the carrier was specifically designed to keep cats in... Masters got him into a car and left the old house. The old Mouse...
Cat was heartbroken. After all he did, after the endured the wilderness of the street to save the mouse... the cataclysm of his masters ruined everything. The Cat looked out the window and saw trees quickly passing by. He was felt with sorrow. So much sorrow he just wanted to hide somewhere dark... but the only thing he had in his carrier was his old blanket. He tried to bury himself into this old cloth to hide from the world at least somehow... when suddenly, his nose touched something warm, fuzzy, small...
It was the Mouse. It was sleeping in the warm old blanket. The Cat slowly backed in, and covered the Mouse back before it woke up. If his master would look at the back seat now, he would say the Cat was smiling.
