I know the light gray was uncommon... Thinking the white was already rare but I'm positive the dark one was rare before this.

No, it was rare before, I remember that there was originally only one very rare dog from that litter.

The lemur rat from march 2011 went from omgsocommon to very common ^.^

These were common and are now very common. This can now occur due to the changes Nick made when calculating pet rarities; I believe it means enough people with those pets that had "inactive" accounts have recently logged in.
