so my theory now is that pound averages for each rarity weren't quite balanced for VR/ERs, and presumed the ratio of VRs to ERs in the overall pool was much wider than it actually was, leading to very few ERs (like the frost unicorns, winged horses, and dogfish stores! and also malk fire wolves and old tess dragons which I've been observing a lot of) getting a chance to be claimed. mid-advent they seem to have done some percentage tweaking to allow more ERs through, and as that hasn't changed post-events I suspect it is going to be the norm for now! (I would bet omgsrs also got a slight boost, but that's harder to prove with such small numbers and will take a few months to really reveal itself)
midweek edit: seems ERs have returned to previous volume after all, now wondering if it's linked to volume of unknown rarity pets
