Why do people on here lie?

I clicked on someone's trade thread and saw they said:

"Please look through my groups and see if you'd be interested in anything of mine in exchange for the guinea pig! Also, I wouldn't mind random trades. They don't have to be WL, but please keep them fair.

Also, all my items are for trade. I don't like them, so they won't be hard to bargain for, just to let you know.

So I sent a trade and asked for three of their items. They canceled with this message: "Sorry, but I prefer not to trade my items."

Ok, so why lie like that?? I really can't stand most of the people on this website.
