And Flintfang, isn't it because the Maccabees were attacking us or something?

No. XD We were the Maccabees, lead by Judah (and his brave female cousin, who seduced the enemy general, got him drunk, and then chopped his head off), and we were fighting the Greeks, who had invaded our holy temple and destroyed it. We needed to clean and re-sanctify the temple, but we only had enough oil in the lamp left for one day (making more took eight). God made a miracle and let it last eight days. Remember, in the synagogue, the lamp needs to be lit eternally to represent God always watching over us. The oil is why we eat latkes and jelly doughnuts, they're fried in it. I'm Jewish, so I would be glad to teach everyone more about it.

I'm surprised how few members have even heard of Chanukkah/Hanukkah...in elementary school, teaching about Christmas, Chanukkah, and Kwanzaa was part of the curriculum! It's also very important to me to learn about other religions besides my own.
