I jogged toward him, my bookbag sliding off my shoulder. I pushed it back up, stopping in front of him. He wore a bright smile, and I was instantly welcomed into his arms. I felt so safe so warm in his hugs, they were just so sweet and -- Over all too quickly.
"How's my favorite girl?" he asked affectionately, taking my hand in his.
I giggled. "A lot better now. And how's my fabulous boy?"
"Great. More than great now that you're here." he replied brightly.
"You're so sweet that I'm actually concerned about my blood sugar."
He laughed. "Me? Sweet? Naw. I'm the big bad wolf, 'member?"
"Halloween was two months ago, Mr. Big Bad Wolf." I countered, standing on my tippy-toes to peck his lips.
He shrugged. "And I don't assume you'd still like to be Mrs. Big Bad Wolf?"
I snuggled closer to him, wrapping my arms around him and resting my head against his chest. "Of course I do. Just without the stupid costume and over-flow of makeup." I mumbled, my voice muffled.
"I think that's something I can deal with." he chuckled, pushing me away very softly, his hands on my shoulders. He gazed into my eyes with a smile. "I swear you get more beautiful every single day." he said softly, sincerely.
I shook my head self-consciously. "You don't really think that."
"Do I look like I was kidding?" he asked, his face utterly serious.
"I'm not beautiful." I murmured, glancing away.
"No, you're not - You're so much more. Gorgeous, stunning, heavenly... I can't think of a word worthy enough to fit you."
"I love you." I said, blushing lightly.
He just smiled. No reply, just a beaming smile.

And that non-reply was what bothered me. I'd told Starnite I loved him on many occasions. Every day almost. And, now that I came to think of it, he'd never said it back. It was either a smile or some sort of compliment. But he never told me he loved me. "I hate it when you do that." I said, pulling away from him and crossing my arms.
"Do what?" he asked, keeping the smile because he clearly thought I meant that something he did playfully annoyed me.
"That!" I said, gesturing to the smile with an irritated expression.
"Smile?" he said slowly, confused, the smile disappearing.
"No!"
"Then what?"
I sighed, shaking my head. "You know what you do. Or more like what you don't do."
He glanced away, still trying to look as though he had no idea what I was talking about.
But I wasn't fooled. "Star?" I said quietly, feeling hurt.
"I..." he began, but trailed off.
"Whatever. I-It doesn't matter to me." I said, looking away and forcing the tears in my eyes to remain where they were. "My ride is here anyway."
Star paused, looking as if he was going to say it. I paused too, trying to read his expression. He exhaled, wearing a tiny, hopeful smile like that of a man who has just realized he forgot about his anniversary and is trying to get his wife to forgive him. "Bye." he said after a moment, the smile breaking.
With a hurt, angry huff, I turned and walked away without replying.
