. he scares me when he's angry.
His expression is blank, and his breathing is laboured, as if fighting to keep control. He can't even look at me. "Thren?" I venture carefully, examining him for any recognition of my voice. "Thren- look, I know I shouldn't have-"
"No, you shouldn't."
He interrupts me abruptly. This time, he meets my eyes, and I am stunned by the sheer anguish in his eyes. "What if you were caught, Callie? What then? I couldn't-" He breaks off, choked. "I couldn't live without you." Thren's anger has dissapated into distress, and he leans to grasp my hand.
Guilt worms through me. I could tell him it would be okay, but I'd be lying. Thren and I are part of maybe fifty humans left on Earth. Our planet was overthrown by them, and they will find us. It's all we can do to find food on the barren deserts of what was once a beautiful haven.
Thren sighs shakily, gazing around at our tiny hideout. We thought we'd struck gold- a rickety shack long abandoned in the shadow of the mountains, filled with mechanical tools and rope. Clearly, we were not the first to be here, but it was the best we had and we were determined to make the most of it.
"I'm sorry. I won't go out on my own again." I whisper, my lips dry and cracked.
Thren sadly shakes his head. "It's okay, Callie. I love you. But-"
And I will never know what he wanted to say, because right then, the door explodes open and my world is thrown into utter chaos.
[[ooh, apocalypse anyone? I have more if you guys want it <33
