"Happy eighth birthday, Audrey!" an enthusiastic birthday girl said to her best friend.
"You too, Caitlin," the other birthday girl said as the two hugged.

The nineteen-year-old stood quietly, her eyes glued to the gray, marble headstone. Her eyes scrolled over the words again and again, tears streaming down her freckled cheeks, even though she had read them every day for ten years.
Audrey Hall
June 17, 1993 - February 2011
Lost and Never Found
Gone but Never Forgotten
She knelt down and ran her fingers across the stone; it dropped along with her eyes. She knew the her best friend's body wasn't under there. What the headstone said was literal: she was never found, but pronounced dead after being missing for a year and a half.
"Happy nineteenth birthday, Audrey," Caitlin whispered. She could almost hear the words "You too, Caitlin," in reply from her friend. Slowly, she placed a concrete stone next to the marble. It was roughly flattened with two small handprints imprinted in it.
"Do you remember this?" she asked quietly, placing her hand over the small imprint on the right side. "This was from our eigth birthday party. From what we called arts and crafts time." She smiled weakly as her eyes swiveled along the colorful beads that flecked the rock. "This is my hand. And that one is--" Caitlin paused for a moment, took a breath and continued. "And that one was yours."
She sat in silence for twenty minutes. It wasn't until a family of birds began chirping loudly that she snapped back to reality. Caitlin smiled (although her lips didn't part as she did so) and stood up, letting out another deep breath. She began to walk away, and slid her hand across the top of the marble headstone as she did.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Audrey. Happy birthday."
[[ Continuing from long ago, haha. This keyboard sucks, so sorry for any typos! Oh, and Nightlilly, that story was amazing. ]]
>Part II<
"What game should we play next?" Caitlin asked her friend.
A glint appeared in Audrey's eye; it always did when she had an idea. "Let's play adventure!"
"But where will we go?" Caitlin asked.
"Well, we can go to the field and woods down the street!"
"Sounds like a plan."

Pulling out her camera, Caitlin began to talk to her friend. "I'm going on vacation for a few days, so I won't be able to actually be here until I get back." The camera flashed as the picture of the headstone was taken. "But don't worry, we'll still have our daily visits." Caitlin sat down, indian-syle. She was silent for a moment.
"Do you remember that time my dad took us fishing when we were 12?" Caitlin asked. "I fell into the water off the side of the boat. I didn't really know how to swim... When I got pulled back onto the boat, I found out that you were in the water swimming after me before my dad had any time to react." Caitlin sighed.
"You were always heroic. You were always amazing. You were my guardian agel, I swear. Always there for me, whether it was physical or emotional trouble I was in." Looking at her feet, then back at the grave, she took a breath and continued, "And those are always great traits to have." She began to choke up. "But the worst thing about all that is... is that..." Tears began again. There wasn't a day that went by during a visit she didn't cry.
"Audrey, it got you killed. I got you killed."
