I got 2 pets from the Advent box, but everywhere I look I see that some people got 4 pets. Did they trade to get them or did they get it from the Advent box?

They most likely traded them. You can tell by clicking on the pet, if it's been traded it will say underneath the picture who they traded it from. If they didn't, it won't be there.
