Childhood Adoration
It would have been an understatement to say that Kailo Litarian loved Yuushi Parker. From the time he was only a bold four-year-old with a will of his own, Kai had found a friend in Yuu. Yuu had always wanted a little brother to cart around and cuddle, and Kai was the perfect person. They would stay up late, giggling and whispering in the darkness of the bedroom they shared until Mickey or Zero would come by and tell them to go to sleep. Only then would Kai doze off, surrounded in the love and warmth of Yuu's arms. He always woke up cradled against the older boy's chest, the silky black mass of Yuu's hair tossed over him, shielding him from the bright sunlight that streamed through their bedroom window. He would stretch and mewl, then wait for Yuu to wake up so they could get dressed and go downstairs where Zeke was usually just sliding breakfast onto the table. Of course, Isa and Gin never ate with them. They were always cooped up in their room, eating Pop Tarts or cereal and plainly ignoring the hot meal Zeke had worked so hard to make.
Yuu was the exact opposite of his slightly older twin. He would skip downstairs and give his father a hug before settling down for breakfast, always with Kai in tow. When Kai was still little, Zeke would pick him up for a quick snuggle before breakfast. Then the majority of them settled down for a family breakfast before going their separate ways. The only exceptions were Zero, who couldn't stand to be in the sunlight, and Isa and Gin, who hated their parents.
Always, Yuu would give Kai a little kiss on the forehead before he had to get out of the van and walk into the school building. Isa and Gin only said goodbye, their eyes turned on the building instead of little Kailo. Then Zeke would coo on the way to daycare, where Kai spent the afternoon with a few kids his age. Still, he was always ready to leave when Zeke came by, always ready to go home so he could play with Yuushi until it was time for dinner.
Then they got older. Yuushi stopped spending as much time with Kai, more interested in the boys his own age and older, the ones who would pay him attention even when he didn't want them too. Kai would often head upstairs to bed on his own, not quite understanding what he had done to lose his best friend so quickly. When he was still younger, he would often cry himself to sleep, wondering why Yuushi didn't want to be with him anymore. Didn't Yuu still love him? Weren't they still best friends?
High school ended for Yuushi, and Kai was forced to watch as his best friend packed his bags to head to Italy, thanks to a program he had won entrance into. Soon, Kai was sharing his room with his little brother, Calix, and found himself trying to treat his brother as well as Yuu treated him. He was almost certain he wouldn't see Yuu again. Who would want to come back to a place like New York when they were in Italy?
A bad break-up brought Yuushi home in tears, locking himself in a guest room and telling his parents he wanted to be alone. Kai had never been good at understanding when he was supposed to step back, so it only seemed natural for him to go check on Yuu to make sure he was okay. Seeing his friend in so much distress broke Kai's heart and made him come to a vital realization at the same time. He was in love with Yuushi.
He spent a few weeks coming to terms with his feelings before he finally admitted them. After a bit of hesitation, Yuushi murmured his true feelings.
The two have been together ever since.
