I don't quite recognize the breed of last night's hen but this guy's definitely my little Rhode Island Red. Even if that's not what he's supposed to be, that's what he is for me. My favorite chickens. Always had a bunch of them. <3

Glad you like him! You're correct- he is a Rhode Island Red rooster. I'm not much of a chicken fanatic, so I hope I did him justice :)

you did - he's lovely

I was gone for a couple days, so I didn't really get to admire the chickens when they came out at first, but...
    OH MY GOSH, THEY'RE AMAZING.

I do hope we have hens as well, though the roosters are too stunning for words.
10/12 of my flock in real life are hens <3

Thank you,

My opinion is based on the tail, but I think it's a rooster personally (: I've never owned a Light Sussex, so I don't know what either gender looks like : P

It is a hen. The Rooster's have solid black feather on the "Tail" and the red waddle, which are both missing from last night's growth.

Ah! Well, thank you for clearing that up. I've owned a Delaware, but never a Sussex. <3

And generally roosters tend to have longer flowing plumes in their tails. Though quite a few subdominant roosters will have quite "henlike" characteristics including smaller wattles and short tails. Either way I love them both and am now sooo impatient for the next two to grow. Knowing they seem to be based off of real breeds I'm guessing Barred Rock for the black one. (at least that's what I'm hoping since our Barred Rock chicks were always black with slight white patches like this one seems to have) And for the other white one...I have no idea. Leghorns are solid white but our Leghorn chicks were always little fuzzy yellow things. OH well, shall just have to wait and see I suppose.
