Coren & Fawn
A memory. That is all that remains of our time. Once, long ago...
"Oh, Coren! You're so klutzy sometimes!" Fawn giggled as she gently picked up the splattered mess. We were hanging out, happy to be together, as always. I looked at her, her almost clear blue eyes shining into my then red ones. Somewhere in the back of my mind, an evil thought struck me. Tempted me. I broke our gaze, the thought fleeing. Where had that come from? my mind questioned. "Let me help..." I bent down next to her, taking my thoughts from the bad, and focusing on fixing this. I picked up the broken plate. "Where do you want me to put this?" I asked, keeping my head straight. "Oh, just put it in the trash..." She finished wiping up and looked at me. Her face squinted. "What's on your face?" She leaned forward and nuzzled my forehead, snuffling. "What?" I gently pushed her away and walked over to a mirror. "There's a black spot on your face..." I squinted. There was a single black splotch in between my ears on my snow white pelt. I shrugged. "Must just be a spot of something..." She nodded in agreement. "Probably...
Oh, how I wish what I knew now, I knew then. This my last good memory, then the darkness came...
I snarled, every hair on my pelt on end. "Stay back!" The words growled from my throat. I stood protectivly in front of her. My white coat now spotted and swirled black. Fawn's eyes had grown tired, and mine had turned black. The gray male in front of me was a danger, I knew. A short fling with Fawn ages ago and now he thought he owned her. Well I would show him...I lunged, my teeth heading for his neck. "Coren, NO!" Fawn screamed and threw herself in front of me. Instead of stiff gray hair, my jaws snapped shut on silky golden fur. She screamed again, this time the cry filled with pain and sadness. "Oh no, no no no!" I pulled back, but the damage was done. Crimson blood flowed from her neck. Her voice was choked with blood when she at last spoke. "I love you, Coren..." Then she was silent. "Fawn! FAWN!" I screamed her name, begging her to come back. My tears poured down my face and onto her blood soaked fur. "Fawn...I love you..."
I buried her on the seashore. It was her favorite place. I could see her there, the warm sea breeze blowing threw her shiny coat, and I as I saw her, I wept. That night came the nightmares, and with them, the darkness. I began thinking things that are unthinkable, mentioning the unmentionable, and doing horrible things that seemed impossible. I joined a group of others like me, their pelts turning black. Our leader, Coal, was completely black, and the most wicked of us all. One night as I lay dreaming, she came.
Coren....
Coren....
Her voice whispered through the blackness. I turned, quivering. "F-Fawn?"
Coren...
"Fawn!" I ran towards the voice. A figure emerged through the mist, golden fur, clear blue eyes. I ran to her, my heart bursting. She was steps away, happy tears streamed down my face. She looked at me, and I knew I had made a mistake. Her eyes turned black, her jaw opened showing blood stained needle teeth, her dappled pelt fell off showing bones. I screamed. It was demon, one of the many that haunted my dreams. I tried to stop and turn, but it was on me, pinning me to the ground. Putrid breath in my face, gagging me.
Then a cry, making my hear jump.
"Coren!" A shining silver blade slashed, and the demon's head rolled. I jumped up and turned, afraid I'd imagined the voice, but hoping with what little goodness left in me. There she stood, her creamy golden pelt swishing around her, her eyes blinking, and wings on her back. She picked up the blade, and ran to me. "Fawn! Oh, Fawn!" I sobbed, touching her face, licking it, nuzzling it, trying to memorize every feature. She flinched back, but looked at me. "Coren, I'm here. I've always been here waiting for the moment..." I leaned forward to nuzzle her again but she swiveled her head away. "careful! The darkness burns me." She licked the white part of my face and I shuddered with pleasure, glad to feel her touch again. She stopped and looked into my eyes. "I'm your protecter now, Coren, I'll keep the darkness from turning you into one of the Fallen." I looked down at my feet, suddenly ashamed. "Fawn...I've done so many horrible things..." She set her paw on my nose. "Hush, it was not your doing. The darkness is unpleasant and wants nothing more than to destroy. But I will never let it hurt you again." She gazed past my shoulder. A faint light was coming over the hill. "I must go. But remember, I'll always love you..." She kissed me once more, lingering, then she was gone. I sighed happily. She was back.
My love, my friend, my eternal guardian....
