It's the three month rule c:
your pet can be traded for any pet that:
- has the same rarity,
- was released within three months of the pet's release date,
- is of a similar-demand species (this means no spider for a dog or something), AND
- has no special demand of its own (which means that pets like the Shima Longtail are excluded) ^^
