How do people find who has a certain pet you may like to try and trade for?

You can visit the CS Trades - Pets and items board and check to see if anyone has the pet you want up for trade, or put up a trading thread saying you're searching for the pet. You could also visit the CS Auctions board and see if anyone has the pet you want up for auction. ^^

Other than those two ways, you can go to trade with people that are online (you can check this by clicking Forum and scrolling all the way to the bottom, where a list of online users will be) and checking to see if they have the pet you want.

Would it be possible to update the 'is this a fair trade thread' link, it's quite old, and doesn't help much in finding it.
