9/11 Tribute

6 year-old Olivia was giggling.
She stood atop her father's feet as he twirled and whirled and waltzed her around their small living room, keeping his turns in time with the catchy song playing softly on the stereo. His strong hands held hers as they danced through the house.
Olivia's mother stood in the doorway, smiling and shaking her head. "Oh, William, look at you, prancing through the house as though you were Livi's age. Will you two never tire of your games?"
"Never!" shrieked Olivia, bursting into a fit of laughter as her father dipped her low to the ground and snapped her back up.
William grinned at his wife. "Grand finale?" he whispered, winking at Olivia.
She hopped off his toes and they separated, ending up on opposite sides of the room, facing each other. Olivia ran towards her father and jumped, just as he reached out his arms to catch her. She soared into the sky as he lifted her up, Dirty Dancing style.
Her mother clapped for the two of them as her father lowered her to the ground and stood beside her as they bowed. Whisking her into his arms again, he pulled her mother into the embrace and kissed them both on the forehead.
"My queen and my princess. There isn't a luckier man alive."

A gathering of people stood in the center of the graveyard. Firetrucks and police cars were parked around the graveyard's perimeter, each supporting an American flag. Men in uniform walked with their hats off as they traveled from grave to grave. Tearful women and solemn children trailed behind them, stopping at every headstone to pay their respects to the brave men and women who had died fighting and were buried beneath the dirt they stood on.
One girl broke free from the sad procession and knelt to the ground. Tears falling silently down her face, Olivia gazed at the headstone before her.
Rest in Peace

Forever and always, heroes in our hearts

[Like Ika, this story had special and personal meaning for me (though it is completely fictional). I lost my cousin Billy on 9/11 and have never forgotten him for a second. No one should ever forget how many brave men and women risked their lives to save us all. They are truly our country's heroes. I love you Billy-boy, you're in my heart forever <3]
