In my universe, it's not always romance. It's more of a guardianship... and usually its with the same gender. To be paired with the opposite is very odd. It can sometimes be romance, however, although it was generally heavily frowned upon by the rest of the society. Rats who are attracted to other rats is normally a sign that the two pairs are meant to be forever mates, although it seriously depends.
I like 'em. <3 And they all have some interesting stories, because one is not born with one of these or anything; a guardian comes through a specific life movement.
