Its funny how, when looking back, the moments that change your life seem so…well…normal.



“Mind if I sit here?”

I barely heard the voice through the music I was listening to. I blew an annoyed breath up towards my bangs, partly to show my annoyance, and partly to move them out of my face where they always hung. It was an ungodly hot day and I had found a quiet, shady spot on campus to read sitting under a tree alone; something almost unheard of. And now someone wanted to share. I ran my hand through my hair and looked up.

She was standing in the sun, her long black hair pulled back into a braid. The first thing I noticed about her were her eyes; they were gray. Not that light blue that you think of when people say someone has gray eyes either. Hers were honestly gray. I studied her for a moment; people didn’t usually talk to me. She raised one eyebrow at me and pointed at my headphones, asking if I had heard her. I pulled them off of my ears and let them drop around my neck.

“Yea, sure. I guess.” I muttered as I scooted sideways, making room for her to lean up against the tree too.

“Thanks. There isn’t shade anywhere and its just too hot inside.”

“Mhmm.” I nodded my response and pulled my headphones back up over my ears and went back to reading my book.

We sat in silence for about an hour and I had almost forgotten she was there until she tapped my shoulder. I looked at her and lifted one earphone off of my ear.

“Thanks for sharing your spot, I’ve got to get to class.”

“Sure, no problem.”

She stood up and walked away a few steps then turned back.

“My name is Tori.”

I started at her for a second and she sighed and started to walk away.

“I’m Nikki.” I called after her. She turned back and smiled, then headed towards class.



“Mind if I sit here?”

I pushed my hair back out of my face and glanced up at the now familiar gray eyes. I half smiled and rolled my eyes as I scooted over. We’d been sharing “my” spot every afternoon for a week and she still asked. She laughed quietly as she sat down next to me. I glanced sideways at her.

“What’s so funny?”

“Oh, just wondering if you ever actually smile, that’s all.” She answered without looking at me as she pulled her book out of her bag, folded her legs Indian style, put it in her lap and started reading. We never spoke much, and aside from her name I didn’t know any more about her than I did the first day she sat next to me. I chewed my bottom lip for a second then closed my book and turned to face her. She didn’t notice at first and kept reading, twirling the end of her braid around her finger as she read. She finally felt me watching her and looked up at me.
“What?”

“Why do you always come sit here?”

“Um…its quiet. Every where else people are on their phones or making out with someone…you just sit and read. I can go…if you want me to.”

“No, its not that…I just wondered. What are you reading?”

“Stuff for my law class.”

“Law?”

“Mhmm, I want to be in the FBI.”

“Wow, that’s cool.”

“Really? Most people don’t think so.”

I shrugged and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, sudden self conscious for some reason. She smiled and nodded towards my book.

“And you?”

“Oh, I just…its not for a class. I…my classes are writing classes. Nothing interesting.”

“You write?”

“I try.”

“I think its interesting.” I smiled at her and she laughed, “You do smile!”

I bit my bottom lip and looked down at the grass.

“I didn’t think you’d be the shy type.” She said softly, a hint of teasing in her voice.

“I’m…not?”

“Oh, okay.” She raised an eyebrow at me and I shook my head softly as I looked down at my watch. I had about a half an hour until my class and I was starving.

“I’m gonna go grab some food, I’ll…see you around.” I muttered as I stood up.

“I can come with you…if you want?”

“Uh, yea, sure.”

She shoved her book in her back and stood up next to me.

“Just one thing.” She added as she stood. I raised my eyebrows at her, silently asking what.

“You can’t fall in love with me.” I laughed and turned to walk towards the lunch hall.

“Alright, I’ll do my best.” I answered with a sarcastic smile as she came up to walk next to me.

The wind batted at Preyode's armor as he bounded across the ground to reach the castle. He was the scout for the Dracaans, their main resource to gather information of the Lailans. The dead leaves that had scattered from the forest cast up in massive clouds as the wind picked up speed. Right now though, Preyode wasn't on a mission the Dracaans assigned to him; he was heading to the castle on his personal agenda, without his king having knowledge of this. "It's now or never," he thought as he pushed through the barrier the weather was trying to enforce. "I have to see Masteyn." Preyode squinted his eyes as dirt kicked up from the ground at the wind's hands. It was his final opportunity to see Masteyn, as they were to be hung for a crime in 30 minutes, the severest crime they could've committed in their kingdoms: being a homosexual.

Preyode had escaped his hanging through a strategic manner: attacking the guard and risking his life, because he knew he would lose it anyways. He was a knight; he would rather die fighting than die surrendering. He was now going to help Masteyn escape, but as the sunset cast a blood-red glow across the courtyard and the gallows, his heart sank. Masteyn was being led up to the noose, muzzle bound and paws tied. Two guards were pushing him towards the gallows, and just as it looked like all his hope was gone, he locked eyes with Preyode. A new vigor lit in his eyes and he started resisting, pushing against the guards, catching their surprise and using it to his advantage. They stumbled and he broke away, using his momentum and propelling himself backwards to where Preyode was. The black knight's eyes lit up with joy as his mate barreled into him and they rubbed muzzles, reunited once more.

But the people of the kingdom weren't happy about the couple's unity. They barked and howled, causing Masteyn to turn his head. What he saw was devastating: the knights and commoners of the Draacan kingdom were mingling with the Lailans to form one massive army, ready to crush the two wolves by any means necessary, even if it meant uniting with the enemy to conquer a larger one.

"Not good," mumbled Preyode as he pushed Masteyn towards the forest, where there was an opening. Seeing his mate's plan, the white wolf took off to the woods while Preyode followed shortly after. Luckily, the knight couple were fast runners and easily outran the mob of kingdomfolk to the forest, and deep into the woods they lost their pursuers. The two stopped to catch there breath and smiled at each other, delighted to have escaped death and been together once more. "I knew we could do this," Masteyn said softly as he touched noses with Preyode. "I knew nothing was impossible."

Another hunter? I always liked a game. But the second he saw me, he lowered his bow. Pity. I enjoyed a good game of keep-away. But when I tired of it, they were gone.

"James! James!" Desperation was plain in her voice as she ran through the remains of the battlefield."Oh James, please still be alive!" A pair of familiar wings fluttered, bloodstained. "James!" She in the direction and dropped to her knees, gently picking him up. Cradling her brother, she whispered to him quietly, "Please don't die, I need you."
His eyes fluttered open. "E-Erin?" His voice shook, and he coughed. She hugged him gently. "Please, stay with me." A tear ran down her face and splashed on the asphalt.
"Shh..." He smiled faintly, but his face contorted and he grunted in pain.
"No, no, you'll survive. You'll be fine. You'll be my brother with me forever. You promised you'd take me to a movie!" Her tears started flowing fast and thick.
He reached up slowly and gently touched her cheek. "Sis, you'll be all right."
A voice made her look up. A man was standing over the pair of them. James Dearheart. You will come with me. He was scary, surrounded by shadows, everything black and red. His wings were made of cobweb, and his eyes looked like marbles. His voice was deep and scraping. Her brother fell limp in her arms.

"Malina,wake up sissy! We'll be late for school!",Leanne was hovering over me trying to wake me up,in a joking voice,she shouted,"Wake up,you lazy bum!~" I sighed and sleepily said,"W-why must you wake me up so early? Does it bring you such pure joy? Heh.",as I waved my arms around trying to get her off. Leanne got off my bed and said,"Eh,it's the only thing that works really...except scaring you.",with a ridiculously creepy smile on her face. Why did she smile at that? She must be planning something,or someone else is. I shuffled through our room,no one was under anything thank goodness. Ever since that time she got Deane to hide in my closet,I don't trust a smile like those. I snickered quietly,she must just be trying to freak me out,I shrugged it off,dressed for university,and ran to the kitchen. I've had to raise Leanne from ten since our family was murdered two years ago,by a gang member in a bank robbery. She depends on me entirely,and I don't mind all that much. She's changed since the murder though,her whole personality got...better. Like she wanted them gone. It's nothing to worry about though,she was depressed as a child and now she's feeling better. And I'm glad that she's doing well,and that we can put the past behind us.

We began to walk to school and heard someone behind us,there was no one in sight so we thought it was the wind then continued to walk on. Something spoke up,"....D-Don't tr-...-ust...." I turned around sharply "Who's there?!",I shouted,"Who said that!? What do you want?!" It spoke out,"D-Don't trust the demon! What...ever it says...is a cold blooded lie! Don't trust anyone out there! Hide! Quick!",as the voice slowly faded out I shrieked out in terror,"What are you?! And wh-what do you want? Say something! Who's this "demon" you speak of?" I wanted the voice to say something. Anything. Leanne shivered violently and whispered "I f-feel a cold presence on me. Like a cold hearted ghost. That wants to murder me. Help sissy,help me...please.",as tears streamed down her face. I couldn't feel the cold presence,I was worrying. What was that on her? Was it a demon,a ghost....an angel? "Don't trust. Don't trust.",I heard a voice near her. There was something there. "Make yourself seen,or leave." I said. Leanne's body suddenly relaxed and she stopped crying,as if the presence was gone. For today,we were safe from this creature.

I walked towards Leanne and put my hand on her shoulder,she was surprised and looked up,I said "Come on sis,we need to go to school. I'll drop you by the highschool and run for my university class." We ran to her school just as the bell rang,"Well,you're going to be a little late. Just think of a good excuse please,see you later!",I waved to her and fled to my class. Panting I arrived at the front gates,thank goodness the bells haven't gone off yet. I started walking up to the building to go to class,room 6A,everyone was still entering into the class. Mr.Dae announces,"We have a new student today,his name is Aaron. Please welcome him to our university and show him around if you can,thank you." Time passes by through my class,and I write down my work in thought of the spiritual being that spoke to me earlier in the day. I'm still worried about what it was. What could it be even,and what is it doing talking to me,a mere mortal? The school bell rang and I packed up my books and headed out,I was then interrupted by a tall,black-haired man,"Hello,I'm new here and a couple others suggested me to ask you to show me around. So...who might you be,and will you show me around?" he said while slightly smiling. I smiled slightly back and said,"My name is Malina,and sure. Come on,let me show you around the campus." He nodded and followed me as I walked out of the classroom with him. I nudged him and pointed towards the cafe,"There's the cafe,you can get some food from there if you ever get hungry. It's rather pricey though.",I continued to walk on as he followed telling him all the important locations on the campus. "There's the multipurpose room and the library. The library is usually empty,but the multipurpose room is usually full of people. As in meetings,and award ceremonies." Aaron responded "Is that all I need to know? I already know where the classrooms are." I nodded and said "Uh-huh,that's all,are you good now? I have to go pick up my sister from school. Have a good day." I waved goodbye and walked off to go pick Leanne up from school,I walked awhile to get to the svhool with her waiting outside. I gleefully shouted,"Leanne,I have some plans for today!~ We're going out on the town tonight. How much homework do you have to do?" Before she had time to respond I said "Nevermind that,I'm taking you out on the town anyway. Let's go drop our books off at home and get ready."
