I believed ninja-trading to be trying to convince the person that your pet is worth more than it is. Like offering a n00b a pet from a past month and claiming that it is extremely rare because they can't get it anymore. Making them think it is rarer than it is.
The first example Seasonal posted isn't really ninja trading-- it also tends to annoy a lot of players, especially if they already have the common pet you offer.
Starbit's explanation is not ninja-trading at all, it's outright scamming.
Ninja-trading is really just sending blank trades to people for certain pets you want/need, with a message asking if there's anything they'd like in return. Sometimes they ask for something of equal value. Sometimes they ask for something worth more than what you're asking for, in which case you haggle down. And sometimes, if you're really lucky, they just want something really cheap for their pet, like something they happened to miss from this or previous months. There's no lying involved. I use it a lot to get current-month pets that I miss.
Anyways, on to my good trade. My best friend of, what, six years now? Anyways, my best friend, DiabolicReality, gave me the one pet I needed to complete my b-wolf collection, the UR Butterfly Wolf, as a birthday present. I've never been more delighted. ^-^
