actually, I never said they were panthers. I said they were black jaguars, as I am well aware that 'panther' is not a true species

it's actually not intentional, it's meant to be like a black jaguar or something and I just like putting green eyes with black fur xD

there's nothing wrong with calling them panthers, it's just that it's not a very specific term because you may be referring to a different species than someone else. It's pretty acceptable for talking in general terms or for a site like this where species doesn't matter (i.e. this is a jaguar-based domestic cat, so it's not a jaguar at all really) but the term panther when referring to a black cat doesn't really belong in science

you can go ahead and name these black cats panthers if you want, I don't care, we'll all know what you're talking about either way

Sorry, but I had this same thing going with the snow leopards. I write about shapeshifters. Two of my characters, snow leopards, had children, who became violet-eyed snow leopards. And Zero is a green-eyed jaguar. This just totally rocks!

Both jaguars and leopards belong to the genus Panthera, and both species can occur in a melanistic coat (which appears black). Black coats in either species are referred to as panthers sometimes, but it's not a species in and of itself.
If you notice, the image you linked to is labeled "black jaguar."

I going to start a petition in my school to change their animal to a "black jaguar" rather than a panther
