Reynir rocked contemplatively in his shell, running one soft claw back and forth across the crack he’d found. He wasn’t exactly concerned by it – his experience of the world was too limited as yet to know if this was unusual, though it did seem at least a little peculiar.
Everything had been rather odd since he woke up today, starting with how quiet it was. Normally he’d be hearing the muffled peeps and chirps of his siblings tucked under their mother’s wing with him, the screeches of terns overhead, maybe the rumbling voice of his father, Red. Instead, all he could hear was the roar of the ocean waves far below him. All else was silence.
Maybe this is an adventure? he thought hopefully. Those always start out with something new happening, right? Adventure had been definitely lacking in his life so far – being stuck inside an egg was boredom incarnate compared to Red’s thrilling tales of danger and excitement. He loved those stories of flights through fierce storms in the western mountains, where the wind could take the air right out from under a kii’s wings and the driving rain turned feathers to frozen silver in a blink. Reynir squeezed his eyes closed and wiggled his stubby winglets with all his might – some day he would be soaring through those mountain peaks himself, mighty wings braced against the tempest, tails streaming majestically behind him… he could already taste the alpine air and feel the icy breeze across his nares just thinking of it.
Actually, his egg did seem a little chilly – he must have rolled out of the nest in his sleep. Well, that explains everything, he thought with a mix of disappointment and relief, rocking from side to side to get his egg rolling. Just a little over this way and – ack! No, no, no, too fast!
The egg was picking up speed instead of slowing, spinning Reynir head over tail inside it, and before he knew it he was being whirled around in a dizzying blur of light and shadow, only to be brought to an abrupt, bone-rattling halt with a sharp snapping of shell. Dazed, the chick scrabbled at the inside of the egg, only to freeze in shock when a piece of it gave way under his forefoot with a loud crunch. Cool air rushed into the egg, carrying with it the smell of salt and moss, and Reynir stared at the hole in amazement, beak agape. Carefully he wriggled down to get at eye level with the opening, blinking into the light with a rising joy. Was this... Outside? Was he finally hatching?

For those asking, Reynir is a kii, which is basically my take on a gryphon. The half-bird-half-mammal thing always bugged me about gryphons, which are otherwise my favourite mythological beastie, and I wanted to make a gryphon-like creature that was entirely bird while still having an appearance that could be mistaken for being half lion by the explorers who first described them. Reynir's not actually fully fledged yet - he's still very much a baby at this point, and as an adult he'd have much longer feathering over the tail and hocks to support the back end in flight. As it is, he can use his wings to glide for significant distances but mostly has to use his claws and beak if he wants to get up somewhere, as his feathers aren't developed enough for proper flight yet.
I'll post a breakdown of my remaining hints in a bit, but for now, Reynir's story begins:-- snip --
