Ozabmi ♂ and Aicercul ♀ and Aurèle ♂
I originally put these together in a love-triangle, but as I thought more about it, Aicercul and Aurèle's relationship morphed more into a friendship. But here we go, a story, from Aicercul's point of view. <3
I sat in my suite, looking over the papers in front of me. I was trying to work out what was to happen in the war, between my nation, Kilwe, and the enemy nation, Minnete. I didn't know what to do; I wanted to end the violence, but it didn't seem possible. I through my quill down in anger and leaned on my hands, accidently knocking over the ink well. I set it up quickly, still feeling helpless, even though I was the queen. It didn't matter what I thought about the war. It all had to go through the king, Ozabmi. Or rather, my husband, not that I meant anything to him. It was a match made for politics, to avoid a war. And yet, here I was, my nation in a war anyway. I sighed and wished I was somewhere else.
There was a knock on the door, and I called out that they could come in. A slave walked in, carrying my afternoon tea. He was of medium height, with longish auburn hair. Oddly, I did not recognize him. He set down the tea with a nod and began to leave.
"Wait," I said. He turned, and stood politely.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"Aurèle, your highness," he replied quietly. There was something different about his voice...
"Are you new here?" I asked, curious for more information.
"Yes, Madame," he said. I heard it now--he had an accent. It was odd, not quite French... Not quite French! I thought, realizing that I had heard that term before. It was what was used to describe Minnete, our enemy!
"You are from Minnete?" I asked, slightly confused.
"Yes, Madame," he answered again. I looked down at my teaspoon as a I played with it. Quietly, I said "I did not realize that Ozabmi had begun taking prisoners from Minnete." I looked up at...Aurèle, was it?... and said, "Please sit down."
"It is not right for a slave to sit in the presence of a queen, Madame," he replied, remaining standing. After I nodded slightly, he continued, "But you would not have a problem with having more slaves, would you, Madame?"
Normally, I would be appalled that a slave would ask me something so frankly, without even beggin my pardon, but I didn't realize it until later; it seemed normal then. I looked up at Aurèle, sure there was a slight fire in my eyes, "All the slaves in this castle are criminals."
He started slighlty. "I am sorry, Madame, I didn't know....Criminals?"
"Yes, thieves and such. That way, they are being punished, but they are still working for their living. And they are not just thrown into a dungeon and tortured."
"That is a brilliant system, Madame. Who came up with it?"
I smiled. "I did." We continued talking for a few minutes, before he left to do other duties. I seriously doubted that Aurèle was a criminal, and it was unsettling that Ozabmi had begun taking prisoners in Minnete, and using them as slaves no less! He had not asked my opinion, or even informed me. But then, he never did. I tilted my head back, closed my eyes, and sighed.

Over the next few months, Aurèle and I talked every time he brought me tea. He was good-natured, and seemed to hold no resentment, for me, at least. We quickly became good friends. But then one day, as he was leaving, Ozabmi walked through the door. Aurèle nodded to him, and hurried through the door quickly.
"You seem to be spending a lot of time with that slave," said Ozabmi, getting to the point quickly.
"Aurèle is my friend," I answered simply. Ozabmi's look darkened.
"Royalty and slaves are who spend that much time together are never just friends," he said, glaring darkly at me.
"But we are," I said. Quietly, I added, "And he would not be a slave if not for you!"
"I would be careful what you say, and spend less time with that slave, if you do not want him to be hurt," he said, his voice quietly threatening. I started, but hoped I did not show it too much. He was threatening me through Aurèle? I stared him straight in the eye and nodded curtly, refusing to be cowed.

A few days later, as I was leaving my suite, I heard the sound of running feet coming down the hall. Curious, I looked around the corner and nearly collided with Muilyl, my friend and the chief assassin.
"What...?" I began, as I saw the look of distress on Muilyl's face, tears starting in her eyes. And then I saw: she was holding Aurèle in her arms.
"Quickly!" Muilyl hissed, rushing into my suite, as only my close friends could do. I hurried after her, closing the door behind her, taking in details the whole time. Muilyl's and Aurèle's bloodied clothes, Aurèle's unconcious form, though his face was still in pain, Muilyl's panic. She whipped her head head around, black hair flying around, and whispered urgently, "Where can I set him down?"
I pointed to my bead, not worrying about stains. Muilyl layed him down, on his stomach, and my heart dropped as I saw his back; he was wearing a low-back shirt, and had clearly been whipped. I turned to Muilyl, distressed, and saw she really was crying now.
"Ozabmi," she gasped quietly. "He ordered me to torture and kill him."
"What?" I asked, feeling as if all the air had left my body.
"I--I started, but I didn't want to...just couldn't do it." Muilyl hung her head. I began to regain my composure.
"We can't keep him here," I directed. "Ozabmi can't know." I knew what would happend; both Aurèle and Muilyl would be dead then. Not that I knew Aurèle wouldn't die anyway. "We must take Aurèle to the tower." Muilyl nodded, clearly focusing on the job at hand, not her emotions. She picked up Aurèle again in her muscled arms, and we ran quietly out the door.
The tower was the tallest part of the castle. Ozabmi had a fear of heights, even if he didn't admit it, and never went up there. At the top, there was a small room, complete with a couch, table, and chair. After the long rush up the stairs, we arrived, I panting more than Muilyl. She layed Aurèle down again, on the couch. We stayed quiet and looked at him, still unconcious, for a minute, trying to sort out what to do.
"Do you know anything about wounds?" I asked her.
"I am trained to kill, not to heal," said Muilyl, her voice thick with a bitterness I didn't recognize at the time, through my panic.
"Get the castle doctor. Make sure he doesn't tell anyone," I instructed. She nodded mutely and set off down the stairs again. There was no question he would obey; Besides Ozabmi, Muilyl was the most feared person in the castle. I pulled the chair from the table and sat, looking at Aurèle, and thinking about him. After a minute, he opened his eyes a bit.
"Aurèle?" I said, hopeful at last. He didn't answer right away, eyes darting about, as if he was trying to piece everything together. Finally, and oddly, a small smile appeared on his face, and he replied: "Madame?"
"Are you all right?" I asked, not realizing the foolishness of my question until Aurèle began to chuckled--and then winced in pain. We were quiet for a minute, and I had a realization. Aurèle didn't act like a commoner: he had never used slang or improper grammar, new all the rules of the court, knew things that had had to have come from an education.
"Aurèle? What were you before they captured you? You're not a normal commoner, are you?" I probed.
"Ah, Madame," he replied, beginning to close his eyes. "Even a slave must have some secrets."
"Please!" I said, touching his arm, suddenly desperate to know. He opened his eyes wearily and gazed at me.
"Well, Madame..." he began. "I am the prince of Minnete."
And then he fell unconcious again.
Derp, hope I didn't kill anyone with the huge post. o3o
