Hmmmm Let's see if we can figure out which woodpeckers inspired which of these chicks!!


Definitely resembles a Northern Flicker, or a Flicker of some sort. But with the red spot of the back of its head, I'm going to hedge my bets with the Northern Flicker


Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker?


Hairy or Downy Woodpecker? Could be red-bellied as well, this guy is difficult because there are a few that look like this!


Acorn Woodpecker, maybe? As another user suggested


A mystery. Could be Red-Headed, as the Juvenile's look very brown before their plumage sets in. Only other one I can think of at the moment is the Smokey-Brown Woodpecker, which would be our more South American bird of these kinds

Some are right, some are wrong and some are right but on the wrong bird

Hardly come on CS anymore, but caught a glimpse of these in the outcomes thread and knew they had to be woodpecker-inspired! SO sweet. Curious to see any final lineart edits, if present...

I'm only familiar with a handful of coastal California species, but based on that, I'd be seconding the northern flicker as a pretty strong contender for #1, with its red spot of crown, black spotty down feathers and dark malar (mustache-like) stripe.

#3 looks like it could arguably grow to a downy, hairy or nuttall's woodpecker, although as Fae also pointed out, these birds are relatively similar in their coloration and patterns, hard to confirm til older. Plus, I really am not sure about the juvenile's facial markings, if any, or perhaps their faces are all gray like this chick's? No experience there </3

Sweet #4 seems like a shoe-in acorn for me, with the bright pale iris, large red crown, and white markings above and below - but not quite touching - its bill.

...has anyone brought up the idea of the zebras being based on hot chocolate? or maybe chocolate cakes?
they just give off a very chocolate-y vibe, and the ones above seem kind of... hot chocolate+marshmallow-esque. or maybe like a chocolate cake with cream between each layer, idk

You know, now that they mention it, the designs also remind me a bit of those creative cream designs that are done on coffee. you know, like these:

Chocolate has been previously mentioned! However I don’t think that’s what they’re based on.

Not a stretch! That was actually my first thought when I saw the first growth. c: Until I looked up pictures of different trees, I was like ehhh prob not lol. And then, they reminded me of nutmeg. xD
