Gary (M) and Joan (F)

Part 1

I was working in the dusty old library when he came in with a bunch of his friends. They were laughing loudly, and either not seeing or ignoring the dirty looks that people were shooting them. I swallowed hard, knowing I, as my duty as a librarian, had to shut them up. But luckily, once they got to the books, they were silent.

I f I inched forwards and acted like I was looking at a book, I could catch snatches of their conversation.

" ... seriously? That wouldn't help you get a girl! Stop.... "

" .... not playing dude. I need to ace this test. Or I can't go to.... "

" I can't believe it. Where's a caculus book when you need it? "

I quickly turned my head away. They were just talking about math. I sighed and went back to sorting the beat up books. I didn't notice him until one of his buddies rudly knocked on the table in front of me.

" Hey, lady? We need to check out this book! " He snorted and laughed as if he said something funny. Another guy high-fived him.

" Enough guys! " Gary said. He shoved the book towards me. " I'm here to check this out. " He said, smiling. He had a dimple on one side of his cheek. I blinked twice and stuttered. " O-okay. Do you have a library card? "

One of his friends mocked me. " O-okay. D-do y-you h-have a-a l-library c-card? " He said in a high voice. The others laughed and punched his shoulder or ruffled his hair.

Gary turned to them. " Stuff it! " He said angrily. " Go wait outside. " There was some complaining, but they left.

" Bunch of idiots. " He grumbled under his breath. Then he turned back to me. " Uh, no I don't have a library card. Does it cost anything to get one? " He asked, friendly-like.

" No, it's free. " I said. I handed him the infomation and watched as he filled it out. His blond hair fell over his eye, and I had to fight the urge to brush it away. He ave the stuff back to me, and I handed him the card automaticily.

He handed it back. " I need to check out the book. " He smiled again, that dimple appearing once more.

" Oh. Yes, of course. " I silently cursed myself out as I checked it out for him. " Here you go. " I said, handing it to him. " Big test coming up? " I asked casually.

" Oh yeah. I have to pass it, otherwise I'm kicked off the field. " He laughed. " Though Math is not one of my strong points. "

Kicked off what field? I thought, confused. Then I releized he was talking about football. "Ohhh, stupid! Then I remeber what he just said.

" Oh, well, Math is one of my strong points. " I said before I could stop myself. What are you doing!? " I could, you know, tutor you, or whatever. If you want. " I quickly added. I was half hoping he would say no.

" That's a great idea! We can study here! I'll come by later tonight! " He exclaimed, his smile growing wider. " See ya tonight! " He said, waving bye over his shoulder as he went out the door.

Probably couldn't wait to get out of here fast enough. I thought sullenly. But he did look excited about it... I thought, my hopes rising.

{{ Emma Morrison (f) }} |||| {{ Jake Allen (m) }}

Emma Morrison was sitting in an uncomfortable armchair by a fireplace that didn't have any fire, fake or otherwise, staring at the teenagers she had grown up with. Most of them were grinding on each other, hands in the air, or on hips, moving almost violently to the beat of the pop music that was roaring out of the speakers. The walls of the house seemed to be vibrating, and the pictures that showed a happy family of five were rocking back in forth, much like the kids that were partying. The kids that weren't dancing, Emma saw, had taken up residence on a couch, or in some cases, the floor, and were playing tongue hockey with each other.

It seemed that almost everyone had one of those cliche plastic red cups with a foamy gold liquid sloshing out every time they so much as twitched. It wasn't beer, the kids here were to rich, and too smart, to drink that 'poor crap'. It didn't make you drunk, didn't make you vomit you guts out, and it tasted delicious. Emma and her friends called it 'Ichor' like the Greek god's golden blood.

Emma had had her own cup of Ichor awhile ago, and now the little cup sat empty on the coffee table beside her. She could only see one other person that wasn't dancing or making out, and that was Jake Allen, the notorious popular-yet-unsociable-guy. He had black hair that seemed to have a blue tint to it, and with startling dark blue eyes that sat almost perfectly on his defined cheeks. He had on a black shirt and pants that had several lighter blue markings that looked almost Tribal. That was Jake for you, always wearing black and blue and never seemed to utter more than a sentence or two.

Jake was sitting on an armrest on the loveseat, seemingly unaware of the two people who were sucking face, and was looking out into the distance, almost like he was daydreaming or something. Emma rolled her dark green eyes, Jake was always staring out at nothing and spacing out in a middle of a conversation, and it annoyed Emma to no end. Emma turned her head away from him whilst tucking her dark brown hair into a messy bun, and looked around at the raging teenagers to see if she could spot her friend Shannon. She wanted to go home now.

She was still looking around desperately, ready to go home and sleep when a heavy, large hand rested on her shoulder, and a surprisingly deep voice asked a question. "What, or who are you looking for?" Emma turned around quickly, and looked right up into the dark blue eyes of Jake Allen.

Wintersmith ~~~~~~~ Summer

The two seasons gazed down at the gathering villagers from their perch, high in the clouds. Wintersmith wore a scolw on hsi face, as his beautiful. snowy wonderland was ending, and the sunny days of Summer was about to begin. Summer, however, was all smiles. It was finally her turn to make the flowers bloom, the crops ripen and the newborn animals come.

The villagers started the Morrison dance, as they called it, but it was really just a welcome dance for Summer. Summer joined in the dance, her grin wide, but no one but Wintersmith could see her beaning face.

Wintersmith hated summertime, but not Summer. Though he would never show it, he really cared about her. In his mind he always thoughy What am i doing setting my sights on her!! We are polar opposites, literally! and he would always shake his head.

As Summer danced, Wintersmith watched in awe as her golden brown hair flowed around her, the butterflies dancing with her. He let out a sigh, knowing he shouldn't stare.

He did it anyways.

What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart

The girl scrunched her knees up to her chest, her eyes focused on her feet. The noise of people permeated the hallway, mixing with the sound of death. Her brother had been here for too long-a part of her wished he would just hurry up and get better, but the rest of her knew the truth; he wasn't ever getting out of this hospital. The sound of a shutting door caught her attention, and she looked up. One of the many doctors motioned to her, and she stood with the ease of one who has been jumping up continuously. Her feet made no sound as she walked to the door, opening it slowly.
The beep of the machines assaulted her, and she was filled with the desire to shut them up. Swallowing the sudden lump in her throat, she walked into the room, her eyes flicking around the room as she took in everything before, at last, she looked at the bed's occupant.
If she hadn't know who he was, she never would have recognized her brother. His eyes were still the same bright green, but the sparkle was gone. His lips curled into the thinnest of smiles as he looked at her, and her heart clenched as their dry skin cracked, blood beading out along it. His voice was weak, a ghost of it's once rich timbre.
"Hey. You still here?" She nodded, voice stuck somewhere in the recesses of her chest. His eyes closed for a second too long, and she stopped breathing, terrified. A rattling cough forced its way from him as his eyes opened, sliding across the room before hazily focusing on her again. "Do you think you could do something for me?'
She nodded again, blinking back tears as she sat down on the edge of the bed. He smiled at her, and she forced a smile to her own lips, for his sake. "What do you need?" His hand found hers, pressing a small key into it.
"There's this box...'

In a box high up on the shelf, left for you, no one else
There's a piece of a puzzle known as life
Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight

The girl's hands shook as she reached for a box, half hidden on the top shelf of her brother's closet. Tears streaked down her face as she fumbled the key into the lock, blurring her vision as she twisted it. She paused, fingers on the lid, as sobs broke from her chest, an iron band of grief tightening around her. Eyes shut against reality, her brother's words swam through her mind, as they had many times in the last year.
"There's this box, in my closet. I want you to have it okay? Now promise me you'll open it after...well after. Okay?"
She'd promised, like the good sister she was. And yet, no matter how many times she'd been here, she had never been able to take that final step and lift the lid. Blinking, she took a deep, shuddering breath before wrenching open the lid.
Her smiling face stared back up at her, forever alongside her brother's in a photo. She recognized it as one taken only a few months before he got sick. Wiping her tears with the heel of her hand, she sifted through the box's contents, recognizing faces and places, all captured moments of their lives. There were more than just photos, too; the box held the occasional keepsake, along with letters and drawings, some she recognized as her brother's, others she knew to be her own. Her hands paused near the bottom, and she lifted out the oldest photo she had seen yet.
Her hand shook as she pressed her fingers to the photo's surface, tracing the familiar faces of her family. There was her brother, a lively nine with no idea what fate had planned. Her mother, who she hadn't seen in fifteen years, with arms wrapped around her brother's shoulders and a carefree smile plastered over her face; her father, laughing at something, with one arm draped around his wife. The other was curled around a little girl of two, whose face was positively beaming.
For the first time, a smile cracked through on her face, a simple twist of her lips as she realized what her brother had really left her.
---
The sky was clear, sun shining gently as she made her way through the cemetery. She stopped before her brother's grave, sinking to her knees in the grass. She ran her fingers over his name.
"Hey big bro. Thought I'd come talk to you today. We're doing okay, dad an' me. Mostly, anyway. He tried to call Mom again, but you know how that works out. At least he didn't break the phone this time." She paused, biting down on a sob. "We really miss you. It's lonely around home now, you know?"
Her voice broke as tears slid down her face. Dashing the tears from her face, she fumbled in her pocket, searching. "I brought you something. I found it in that box you gave me, but I figured you needed it more." Pulling out a stone frame, she set it upright carefully, brushing away some of the grass. She stood, running her hands across the frame's top. Smiling, she turned to leave, adding one last goodbye. "Happy birthday, brother."
The faces of her family smiled at her as she walked away.

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

An angel
And a demon
It's forbidden, don't you know?
But I can't help but still want to be your Romeo. . .

I rolled over, groaning. What on earth was that noise? I got out of bed, moving over to where I was sure the sound emanated from - the window. Opening it up, I looked down, only to see his face. "Teskan?" I called down questioningly, wondering if I was still locked in a dream. "What do you want?"
"Come down here." Teskan called simply.
"It's three in the morning, Tes." I replied, sighing.
"Yeah, so?"
His blatant disregard for my confusion actually was sort of funny. I rolled my eyes with a smirk and ran over to get dressed. Once I decided I looked proper, I dove out the window, my wings letting me hit the ground silently. "So why did I have to come here?"
"I wanna show you something." Teskan said, bounding off. "Follow me!"
I followed right at his heels, the two of us shooting silently across the earth, trees whipping past us like simple blobs of color. He finally stopped, and so did I. We came upon a beautiful pond, lit by some sort of unnatural sunset-like lighting. Tiger lillies and wild roses bloomed everywhere, little koi fish swimming about in the water. The crickets made their usual sounds, and beautiful butterflies of every color zoomed by, flittering around us. Just when I thought this scene couldn't get any better, I was astounded to find golden fireflies zipping about. Fireflies? In these parts? It was a rare scene. "Teskan..." I sighed, my eyes on my paws.
Teskan's smile disappeared. "You don't like it?" he asked disappointedly.
"No, I love it, it's just... My parents would kill me if they caught me out here."
"Pft, every teenager ignores their curfew."
I giggled grimly. "It's not the time, it's the companion."
Teskan frowned. "Who cares?" he said, his voice sounded almost as if he were hurt to hear that. "Can't you just relax for one night? I mean seriously." he sighed - which sounded quite irritated to me - and looked away.
"You know I can't be seen with you. You've always known. You have the chance to spare yourself being annoyed and you have the chance to spare yourself all this trouble. How long did this take you to find?"
"A week or so." Tes muttered.
"Exactly. You go through too much trouble for me when you know that it's not going to change anything between us." I said, shaking my head. "I don't even know what we are - Enemies, acqauntances..."
"We're friends, Aaheli." Teskan said, somewhat defensively, though I didn't know what - or who - he was defending, seeing as I hadn't made a remark about him, nor had I made one about me.
"We can't be, Teskan!" I replied loudly, a bit snappy too. "I'm leaving." I said, turning.
"Don't go." he said so quietly I barely heard him, though his voice sounded desperate and uncertain.
"And why not?" I turned back to him, my eyes narrowed to match the annoyed look I wore.
Teskan glanced away. "Because..." he sounded as though he wanted to say something important, but he was hesitating. "Because you're going the wrong way." he finished with a sigh, looking down. "The shortcut would be better." he said quietly, pointing over to a path I hadn't seen when coming here.
I was gone without another look back.
x~x~x~x~x~x
The day after that I admittedly felt bad about what happened. I hadn't even appreciated the fact that he did all of that for me. I just shot him down and left, possibly hurting him though I had no way of knowing for sure. I just completely blew away his high hopes, and I didn't even stay a bit longer to tell him how sweet that was. But he knew for a fact that us even being friends was atrocious, let alone anything more.
That boy just never gave up. Everytime I rejected him, he came back stronger than ever, with something even more unbelieveable. Sometimes it made me wish that I could be with him, but the moment I left all those thoughts faded away because I know for a fact that I don't have any feelings toward him. At the most we're just barely friends, and absolutely nothing more.
x~x~x~x~x~x
Teskan sighed. He lie out in the field near his home, staring up at the vast gray sky. He stood up, dusting himself off and beginning to trudge through the field, walking but having no true destination - He just needed some time to think.
Before he knew it, however, it begun to rain. The water droplets pattered down on him, slowly getting him quite wet. Soon, this rain grew into a storm. Lightning lit up the black sky, and thunder roared loudly, filling his ears. He groaned, jogging over to take shelter inside an abandoned cave.
Thirty minutes later, the rain still hadn't let up. At least this was giving him lots of time to consider what would truly win her heart over. The daughter of two highly regarded angels, both in council with the Lord himself, and both considered to have very high ranks. And he, the son of Hades, grandson of the Devil and considered to be quite the frightening, murderous menace. The chances of ever being with her were one in a million. But he wouldn't give up. No, he loved her too deeply, felt feelings for her too strong to be swept away by bloodlines. They came from two different worlds, but the saying, "opposites attract" fit in nicely here, did it not?
Only, he was of her feelings toward him. Did she even have any? Teskan didn't know, and he had a feeling he wouldn't know for quite a while. She always obeyed by the rules, and she wouldn't stray just to be with a bad boy, would she? Little did she know, she meant the world to him. Finally, as the rain ceased, he headed on home, deciding that he'd try again tomorrow.
Three (thousandth) times the charm?

I found it in that box you gave me, but I figured you needed it more." Pulling out a stone frame, she set it upright carefully, brushing away some of the grass. She stood, running her hands across the frame's top. Smiling, she turned to leave, adding one last goodbye. "Happy birthday, brother."
The faces of her family smiled at her as she walked away.
