Hence... the reason I shut down my trades and locked all my pets until I learn more
Thank you so much, Nick! <3
Now, I want to make sure I am getting this straight, since I think a lot of users, particularly the ones who use the rares list, won't be following my train of thought.
"Instead of counting up all of the pets that are on accounts, we only count the ones that are owned by people who are still playing CS (so that pets owned by players who quit long ago don't skew the results.)"
Means: Only the # Sunbacks on active user accounts contributes to the rarity tag. We no longer have to take into account that 50 Sunbacks are on inactive accounts, or that there are 25000 inactive users counting towards the member part of the rarity tag.
Why we thought old pets were worth more (generally):
Because there were fewer users around to adopt them, and many of them are on inactive accounts. We don't know how many aren't in circulation anymore, so an old very rare is more valuable than a recent very rare because all the recent very rares are in circulation and the old ones are not. Therefore, the older pets are worth more than newer pets of the same rarity tag.
What the new rarity system is saying is:
Only active users and their pets count towards rarity. So, now we are determining rarities using only this group of pets and users. This means that date no longer means (there are less of me around). Rarity means (There are less of me around). If you're an uncommon 2008, you're an uncommon because there are that many of you in active circulation. We no longer have to add: but some of those are on inactive accounts, so really there's fewer.
If you're a 2011 rare, you're a rare because there are that few of you in circulation. There are less of you in active circulation than there are of the 2008 uncommon. You're actually rarer! Congrats!
What the new rarity system is saying is:
There are a lot of rare pets in the early years 08/09 because there were fewer people to adopt, and not as many users are active now. HOWEVER, they are not worth anymore than a recent rare is, because the pool is the exact same. Maybe they are further along in the VR range, maybe they aren't. But the point is, the number of pets between an 08 VR and a 2011 VR is ONLY the unknown number in the rarity's range.
Even with new VRs, we can't say how many or how few of them there are in circulation compared to a Sunback. You can't say anymore there are DEFINITELY less Sunbacks. Only that they are in the same range for active users and active pets as a St. Patrick's Day Dragon.
Therefore, older pets are no longer "worth more" simply because they're older. They might be more likely to change rarity sooner, maybe not. It depends on how many are in the range, and we just don't know that. But what do know is that the numbers for all VRs are going to be close to the same, and that they're all worth more than a rare of any year. The inactive accounts and users aren't in the picture anymore, so you can't use them to call a pet rarer.
You can of course hold onto older pets with the idea that they'll probably change first, for now. There's no guarantee after December 18th of this year, because what's given away will be very accurate. They could easily match up the number of a less common VR to that of a more common one, which is why it'll be very hard to tell later on, because they just might be fairly close! ^_^ And of course, you have un-re-released store pets, so you might want to hang onto them if anything.
Anyway, many people will protest and disagree with this, but these are my thoughts on why date and the rares list is no longer as accurate or reliable (or it won't be, after the 18th, when Nick has the ability to repair any damages this change created). ^-^; I'm a little tired so I may have sounded confusing; my apologies! I just hope I clarified things a little bit for those wondering what Nick meant.
And Nick, if this isn't what you mean, please correct me!
The rares are great, the only thing I would've liked to have seen is a step between VR and OMGSR, but I guess with the new numbers we don't need it as much!Law wrote:Galapagos - Read the whole thing, and I can see your reasoning.
However, would you trade your punk store dog for one of the store pets that was just released this month? I don't know about you, but I wouldn't :S
Actually, that's my only one so I won't be trading it for that reason.
BUT the older store pets didn't shoot up in rarity, either. There are so many of them around that even with all inactive old accounts and pets no longer counting, they still are VR. ^_^ Like I said, they aren't re-released so hanging onto those isn't a bad thing. The store pets are more a gray area than anything else, because they don't have that boost. I'm not sure how they'll look moving forward- and like I said, old pets might be indicative of a faster move up, but we don't know just how few of them there are compared to other store pets of any year.

Same here...im only accepting trades for a few of my Advent List dreamies, yet people wont stop sending me common/uncommon trades, even when my trade rules (in big bold letters) says not to -.-
