does split mean each one colour can grow into multiple different colours and not necessarily just what it first appears to be?

Basically!
A split outcome means that two or more adult outcomes can grow from what looks like the same middle stage.
Let's say you have 6 chicken eggs. 4 of them grow into a red baby chick on day 2, but when the next growth happens, only one of them grows up into a red chicken - the other three grow up into a blue chicken instead, even though they all looked the same as chicks and grew on the same day.

Sometimes outcomes also have identical middle stages, but they grew on different days (like the moon dogs on the same page). That's not a split - but sure does get confusing if you don't label the growth dates of your pets, haha.

For extra confusion fun, however, it's also perfectly possible for pets to split multiple times :P For example, your red chicks could have a second middle stage where some of them turn blue, but then those blue ones split up again into blue and purple adults.
