No, the topic that Hekomi linked to must've been moved to the staff forum awhile ago. ^^

OK. I always hear that dates matter. Like, a 2012 rare is worthless than a 2008.
But why? If they are the same rarity, isn't there the same number of them in circulation?

Back in 2008, there were less users to adopt the pets, but in 2012 there was a lot more users to adopt the pets - and this is over a 4 year period. This means that because of the number of 2008 pets compared to the 2012 pets, the 2008 pets are rarer. ^^

And technical rarity is calculated by how many active users have so and so pets.

I don't get why people think that a rare from 2012 is more worthless than a uncommon from 2009. As far as I know, the rarity tag is the same for all pets no matter what year the pet is from. A uncommon dog from 2009 will never be more rare than the rare dog from 2012. Even when the uncommon 09 turns rare, the rare from 2012 is still more rare than the previously uncommon pet from 2009. Anyone care to explain this to me?

The concepts of forever homes and wiggle room ^_^ explained in these posts:

Say a rat from 2010 and a rat from 2012 have the same rarity bar and the same demand. Let's also say that there are only around 6000 of each of them on this site (meaning their numbers are the same as well). How much does date value actually go into deciding whether it's fair or not?

If there are about 6000 of each within the active trading population then they should be reasonably similar in value. The disparity comes due to the fact that if a pet is older, chances are that some of the people holding onto it aren't playing anymore. Or everyone who wants it already has one as part of their permanent collection and isn't willing to trade it anymore, since the new pets move around a lot more than old pets. This also makes it harder to trade for, so the perceived trading value could be higher.
So dates are still important.

Orchid Sprig wrote:I think dates don't matter is a bit of an overstep. I think they just matter less. Now a January 2012 can be traded for a July 2012. Before it was seen as totally unfair due to what people called the 'three month rule'. If they were more than 3 months apart, it wasn't a fair swap. It will make trading within the same year easier. A lot of people wouldn't trade a January 2011 for a December 2011. Now they are closer to fair since they are rated equally. I still wouldn't trade my January 2010 for a December 2011. Age will still matter because of two main things. One is because just like the last system, each rarity has wiggle room. One Very Rare is not exactly as rare as another Very Rare. Also, the older they are, the more likely they are in 'forever homes'. At least that is my take on this ^^'

Years still matter in the sense that the older a pet is, the more likely that it's in a "forever home," and as such, the more likely that less are in circulation ^__^

As an example with random numbers: If there are 9000 of a rare pet from 2009 and 9000 of a rare pet from 2012, then technically, they're worth exactly the same. However, since the 2009 pet has been around longer, it's more likely that a lot of those 2009 pets are in "forever homes" compared to the 2012 pets. As such, even though there may be the same number of those pets on the site, there will probably be less of the 2009 pet in circulation, so it's worth more.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but I'm wondering --
Does the 3-month rule still apply if you're jumping years? ^^ ie, is a January 2010 tradable for a December 2009?
And does that still work/not work if we're talking about rares? ^^

The 3 month rule works best in the same year, species and rarity.

I wouldnt trade a december 09 uncommon for a january 2010 uncommon. But if it was say.. a 2010 jan rare like the zodiac dogs, i'd trade my december 09 rare for that any day ^.^ So it really depends on the pet, the demand and the person you are trading with c:
