I mean the new version of the rat is just as pretty as the original, but why exactly is a change needed if nothing was copyrighted about the two designs?

The similarities weren't a random coincidence, the same pallette was intentionally chosen for both designs. While an artist can't 'steal' from herself, the original design belongs to Aywas and the rat design belongs to CS. We don't usually allow our artists to reuse ideas and design concepts which have been used for CS, and Aywas has the same policy. It's better for both sites if we don't have overly related designs. Although the markings weren't related enough to be considered copyright infringement, that doesn't stop people from feeling angry about it.
It sucks to make mildly unnecessary changes to a pet people have already adopted and traded. But I think the change is minor enough that it isnt a big deal and a better solution than ignoring the similarities completely.
