Minus getting free pets from people who were quitting, which doesnt happen very often.

I had to do that a lot lately. Go to the free adoptions. It is difficult tho. I tried the whole "give free pets away and be nice thing, but it just didnt work" People wanted just free pets and no trading was done and i lost a lot of pets. So now im down to like 30 trade pets and they are all common-like. Now because i wont give free pets at at, i am called greedy and mean. I feel as if i cant win. lol So lately i have been stalking the free threads and trying to build up my trade group again. (and find pets im missing of course)

Good luck! This trading techniques that I've done since I started are what helped me build up my trades in order to get the rares.

As for the mean and greedy thing, take that with a grain of salt. People think they can badger others into giving them pets which is not cool at all.
