Staff Litter Discussion Thread 2017

I don't think this has been brought up before, but perhaps Lilian's is the PPS? I say this because Thalia technically didn't grow and even Sabriel barely follows traditional adult lines!

I think it kinda goes with one of her previous pets.



So, it has a baby as well but isn't a PPS, which Sabriel is an adult, so it would still be adult lines really.

That makes sense, but Selkine was her pet and the Chubs came afterward whereas Thalia is her pet and Sabriel came afterward - so the PUP this year technically didn't grow, its companion is just an adult? I may be misunderstanding something though so please forgive me x'D

I think it's safe to assume that when the PPS does come, it'll have the PPS tag to avoid confusion

I recall a staff member saying once that a PPS pet that grows in any way prior to becoming a PPS will have the tag. PPS pets that do not have the tag are generally ones that you receive already in their PPS state (such as from an event box). Even then, some of those might have the PPS tag, but I recall a staff member saying that artists can elect to leave it off in those instances (if I'm remembering correctly)

I can see how the double pet thing in Lilan's, or the size of Sketchi's might confuse people into thinking that they are the PPS pet in some way, but I think it's safe to say that they would have the PPS tag if that were the case, and would likely not feature any linework from the adult dog lines

Keep in mind that last year's staff litter had a pet like this that was not the PPS, as it technically "grew" to a distinct third stage

Even though this is something that became very common over the years it's not necessarily the norm... in fact I was really surprised that some people considered Sabriel the "dragon outcome", because he is more bat-bear-dog monster than anything XD.

Lol I didn't really notice the trend with the dragon outcomes until just now, but I can def see how people expect a PPS when there is one each year ahahaha. I guess it's just Sabriel's wings people are honing in on to relate him to dragons? Since that's definitely the only dragonish thing about him other than maybe the crest on his head ahahaha

I was not expecting that

Sabriel's design was actually heavily inspired on Hoary Bats(x,xx, xxx), which is easily my ultimate favorite bat species. Just take a minute to appreciate how friggin' fluffy it is! x3

As for the rest of the design, I decided to go for natural looking patterns due to this year's palette having more natural, earthy colors. I focused mainly on African Wild Dog markings since they are simply gorgeous, plus some piebald on the wings. I couldn't resist adding a tiny heart to his chest, too, but it's very subtle and may be completely overlooked if you aren't paying attention.

I think this palette was my favorite so far due to its natural look. Until now we've had many palettes with bright, clashy colors, and thus I found this a very refreshing change of pace. Specially because it created a lot of what I call "cozy designs". These are basically designs that are very soothing and pleasant to the eye without any aggressive contrasts or flashy colors, the kind that you would admire while leaning back in your chair and sipping tea.

Yeah, it's cool to see the inspiration for sabriels design and this staff litter was the best yet! and i Loved the twist you added with the pets growth, liked the pet from the start and loved it by the time it grew, Great designs as always lillian!

Ohhhh those are some pretty neat characteristics to choose for him :O
Def thought the heart on his chest was cute when I noticed it ahahaha

And I gotta agree on this palette being nice, pleasing to the eye, and as you said-- "cozy"
I have liked a few of the other colour palettes for the staff dogs (most notably the 2011 one), but I'm not a fan of bright colours generally (neon scalds my retinas) and I always gravitate to more nature patterns.
I mean, there are plenty of pets on CS with unnatural, wacky colours that are my favorite-- but many of my faves do tend to be the ones with more down-to-earth colouration, and patterns that could realistically be on a real-world animal
