I'm still rather baffled by formalities...
If I was meeting someone my age for the first time, would I use tu or vous? What is the approximate age cutoff for using vous? Does it relate to my own age, their age, or a mixture of both? (Should I use vous for someone five years older than me? Anyone older than seventeen?) I also have been emailing one person my age and another three years younger than me but doing so in English and I will be going to meet them in person soon. Can I go right to tu since we have already talked before, or should I use vous because it is our first formal meeting?

I'm sorry to ask so many questions, but not even people I know who have been in my situation can give me a solid answer and I'm a little bit desperate to find out in order to not embarrass myself.

If they say 'tu tutoies' (infinitive is tutoyer, not regular) use tu afterwards, because they are saying that you can use tu with them. I would say leave it up to them, because they know the language better and they know when it's appropriate.
Although if you are a learner, and they know that, they wouldn't get offended like they may do with another francophone as you're still learning, and for English speakers there's no difference between the two, so having to use two different 'yous' is extra hard!
(Also 'vousvoyer' is the verb 'to ask someone to address you as vous')

Je parle francais, c'est ma deuxieme ou premiere langue. Je peux parler anglais aussi. Je n'ais pas de accent sur mon keyboard. : (

Tu peux chercher dans ton ordinateur pour 'character map', il y a tous les accents que tu as besoin de pour francais. Aussi pour moi je peux appuyer 'AltGr+vowel' et avoir áéíóú, c'est tout. Mais j'ai un clavier britannique, donc ca pourrait différent.
