Hey, I'm just going to pop in here.

My opinion on the Asylum Seeker issue is this. Although we are far less populated than most countries, Australians like it that way and we don't want to become over populated. Also a lot of our land is 'uninhabitable' and we don't want to push people to live further and further out into the outback. In addition we would like to keep our farming heritage and not become much of a crowded, industrial country. We also don't want to take more land from the aborigines who enjoy living in the outback as their ancestors did before them.

On the other side we also don't want to turn our backs on people in need. We should help them and avoid throwing them out just because we want to have space.

I believe we should let the boats in for now, these people need help and we have the resources to guide them to a better life. But in the long run. We should work harder to assist the countries in need ( The ones with little money, a bad government etc.) ( But not just hand money over to them, they'd end up like Egypt, America gave Egypt money and look what happened to them...) To try and balance them out and eventually build them into a country like ours. Give the people a strong education, put emphasis on good moral values so that they can eventually be taken over by a proper, strong government that knows how to build the country so it can prosper. That way we can save money in the long run by avoiding more asylum seekers in the future, while still helping people in need around the world.

I know this is kinda a dream, there is probably a flaw in this that I missed...

Sorry this was so long ><

PS. I think both Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbot are as bad as each other in different ways, I don't care too much which one we got. I miss John Howard. He was good! :)

(BTW I kinda prefer Tony Abbot coz when you say Mr. Abbot, it sounds like Mr Rabbit ^^)

I agree mostly with MistyBelle. Except for Abbott. I think the bunnies would be offended. But yeah, Howard was pretty good.

I'm just gonna pop in my two cents on boat people ^^

My family moved to Australia from the UK when I was about eight, and it cost us a lot of money. We ended up sleeping in the car for a few weeks because we had no money left. I don't think it's entirely fair to allow the boat people to just come on in to our country. I know these people are living in such horrendous conditons, and to put everything on the line like that really proves it, but it's also unfair for the Aussies who work hard to get here and so on. Then, of course, there's the issue with all the jobs going to illegal immigrants and everything...
On the other hand, it isn't exactly fair to turn people in need of help away. This is a very tough topic to debate about, and honestly I don't even have an opinion myself.
Idk, I don't think the boats should be stopped altogether, but I still don't know about them actually coming to the country.

So guys, what strange questions have people from other countries ask you about our country?
An American friend's mum asked my if I have a crocodile in my back yard, and my friend asked me if I've seen a Kangaroo.

"What is gods name is a redskin?"
"So you have a mint that's called a minty?"
"Echidnas are those man-eating bears that drop from trees, right?"
"Are platypuses real, or is that just a made-up thing?"
