Hm, that's a clever way to go about it. I definitely want to avoid spamming people, as that kind of repeated advertising is probably against the rules, but beginning by simply asking if they might be interested in help isn't a bad idea! That is what you meant, right? Just want to make sure I understood it as you meant it.
That could even be interesting to get a couple of volunteers to sometimes get on and PM a few new users now and then; certainly not with the intentions of PMing every single one, but out of a few we could probably end up with some newbies to assign to people; I know everyone's having to wait an unexpectedly long time.
