You worded my thoughts very well! A pet getting an updated rarity will not change how rare they are in the actual game, it will simply give a more accurate estimate of their value.

Linking the last rarity update from 2019 because I don't think it has been, actually? And might be worth reading for context, since it shows that redistribution was tried before

this is similar to where I'm at--i like the idea of additional labels, but maybe not so many? I like the extremely common/extremely rare tags, perhaps paired with a slight redistribution. A redistribution as drastic as the pictured graph I personally think is a bit much, and would make things like very rare not actually very rare since the percent of pets in it is almost as much as the rare category, but perhaps just adding a couple tags like the EC/ER, shifting pets into those naturally, plus a slight bit of extra spread between the existing categories could be perfect.


The percentage of pets with a label doesn't relate to the rarity of the pets under the label. It's about how many of that specific pet exist. You could have a thousand different pets, but if they all only existed in quantities of 5 each, they would all still be OMGSR lol

I’m not super active here anymore though I’m interested to see where this goes, more rarity labels would definitely help with things like rares and very rares ranging so much in value. However I think this only solves part of the problem users are facing as even if rarities are clearer, you need pets to trade pets and if you want a 2013 uncommon let’s say, most traders won’t take even multiple 2023 rares. When I tried trading again a year or so ago after a long break it was hard just getting pets I used to hoard because there are now 15 years worth of pets, and dates mean a lot to most active traders. People wanted my more recent uncommons and rares for their 2011 very common pets. And while I know this part probably can’t be helped, I had to greatly overpay for most of my dream pets because it seems like a few active traders buy them all at low prices and then turn around and sell them for twice as much. I got the rest of my dreamies and got out because trading wasn’t fun, it was super stressful.

im not as active anymore, but in my opinion i really thing we should spread them out more. if a pet is "omg so COMMON", then why do I barely see them, you know?? one new rarity might be nice, but i think there should just be a bigger rarity shift for pets.

As a very old player, I think the 4 added rarities would be a good thing. There is no solution that everyone will like or agree with, but more clarity on pet values that is not determined by the opinions of user base is a great step in the right direction to making trades less tedious.


However: if the rarity bars are going to be revamped anyway -please- add some textures or differentiating shapes on the rarity bar, in consideration for people who are colorblind/have vision challenges. Regardless of what colors end up being picked, the gradient scale system is extremely difficult to differentiate for people who don't have 'standard' color/vision recognition.

Notches in the bar will definitely be a help, but I want you to imagine the frustration of having to count notches in a bulk trade of 50+ pets because all the colors in the middle rarities look like the same shade of red/green and the font underneath the rarity bar is so small it might as well not be there. It is exhausting, especially on mobile.

Even something as small as only texturing every other 'rarity' color, with something as simple as some horizontal lines in the bar, would be better than nothing. It would help to be able to tell rarities apart at a glance and greatly improve the accessibility for users that don't have 'standard' color vision.

((A more complete example of a disability aware rating system would be:
Rarity one: just a color no marking in the bar, Rarity two: color with diagonal stripes in the bar from top right to bottom left, Rarity three: color with diagonal stripes in the bar from top left to bottom right, Rarity Four: color with horizontal stripes in the bar, Rarity five: color with no markings, Rarity six: color with diagonal stripes in the bar from top right to bottom left, Rarity Seven: color with diagonal stripes in the bar from top left to bottom right, etc, etc.
Pattern repeats until all colors are accounted for, ensuring every middle color is visually different in some way, even if all the colors 'look' the same to the user.))

I think their concern is that they payed for them like they were a real rare and if the rarity goes down then they wasted pets.

This is exactly what I mean. The way rarities have changed around the last few months have been really confusing to me, especially with uncommons becoming rares and then back again the next month or so (even after trading them as rare for rare, etc). If they weren't rare in the first place, why were they labeled as such?

I've been mostly lurking to read what's been said on the forum and I do love reading everyone's thoughts regarding this. Initially, I was on the fence - mainly since I've been through the rarity overhaul in 2019. A lot got confusing back then and it was as if we had to relearn the whole rarity system again, so for me personally that rules out the first option. We're pretty much back to where we initially started pre rarity-overhaul.

Adding new rarity categories would add a lot more clarity to pet values! There's a massive gap between VR and OMGSR that definitely needs to be bridged. It can also help with fluctuating rares/very rares/OMGSRs so they would be stable in a rarity category. I do remember seeing a few OMGSRs that have been flip-flopping recently, as well as rare pets. The extra categories would certainly help with this.

I can go on frequent or long hiatuses and sometimes trying to get back into trading can be super difficult. I honestly don't blame any traders who get frustrated or just give up trying to learn player guides and lists - I know I have. Hopefully this might make trading easier and allow us to make a close pinpoint on pet values. Change can be strange but it's certainly welcomed!

My only qualm is that adding more rarity categories might cause more confusing rare pricing than there already is, or rather cause rare pets to lose the rarity they have (or have had for years)
