Mods, if you see this, could you please move it to 'Share your Art' board?

Love so deep and real it hurts
Tongues so numb can't find the words
On this tree we'll leave our mark
Timeless love, a lone tree heart.

A single year of secret meetings on the very edge of a long-lost continent.
A single handful of seeds scattering life across a once barren land.
A single sapling planted lovingly on a mound of rich earth.
A single promise of eternity together.
A single earth-shattering event, separating two souls forever.
A single carving in the wood of an ever-growing tree.
A single heart lost forever to the forces of love.

Just a small piece of the puzzle, this thriving place is located
on the Northeast coast of a distant land. It is a place of
freedom and mystery, for few have walked through its tall
grasses or over the rolling hills. The land is wild and untamed,
with few trees and patches of desert. The waters are dark and
dangerous, yet still manage to create a pleasing lullaby.
Here, you can breathe just a little bit easier.
Here, you will not be forgotten.

You've always dreamed of a place like this, Heartwood, dreamed of walking along the shores as magnificent creatures danced around you. So, to have that dream come true was quite surprising indeed. Also surprising, was the fact that you lost your way as you explored, having no companion to help guide you. The last landmark you remember seeing was a random rock, possibly somewhere south of where you are now. Here, there are no noticeable landmarks. Just endless waves of grass, the occasional lone shrub, and a hopelessly blue sky. You trudge along carefully, not used to the terrain. Not like the soft hills would wear you down quickly, anyway, you would still like to be careful.

As you crest yet another generic hill, you notice a tree in the distance. Its great branches so heavy they touch the ground and leaves such a dark, rich green that it stands out against the yellow grasses. It would be a nice relief from the beating sun, even with the cool breeze offering a bit of comfort. You stumble your way over, barely catching yourself from a tumble, when something jumps out of the shadows of the branches. You freeze, breath caught in your throat, as terror stabs at you.

"Hey, stranger," a man says. His blonde hair catches the sunlight blindingly as he grins at you. "Welcome to Heartwood."

Heartwood: The Resting Grounds

Postby Northstar. » Mon Apr 18, 2011 3:07 pm

The Resting Grounds

The Beaus of Heartwood

The boys of the Heartwood's Stables are usually well-mannered and polite creatures. However, some can be a bit pushy or rough, so watch your toes! All creatures in are free-range; they are allowed to roam wherever they wish and usually come home for the night. If you happen to find one in your stables or yard, please take care of them until they can return home. ;)

When not injured or on the hunt for a lover, you can find most of these lovely boys just north of Northwind Lighthouse, playing in the cove. They splash through the cool blue waters and race across the soft sands without a care in the world. They like to believe that this little place is a secret, but the girls aren't daft and Sam knows where to find them if they aren't home.

The Belles of Heartwood

The girls of Heartwood are generally easy to get along with, but are a bit more finicky and snappish than their counterparts. Be careful where you stick your nose, for some of these little ladies won't hesitate to bite; they are quite protective of their assigned areas.
On cool, decent days you can find the faes romping through the grass with a delicacy and gracefulness that the big boys lack. Oftentimes, you may find them rolling around playfully, forgetting their serious demeanor when not surround by potential lovers vying for their attentions.

The Babes of Heartwood

This place is a bit more special than the Belle and Beau areas. As younglings tend to get in more trouble than the adults, they are kept in a large fenced in area not far from the ocean. At night, the caretaker brings them into the stables, and if it is raining they are given free-range because they are somewhat water-shy and easily spooked by thunder and lightning. They won't go far before they come running back to their mammas.

It would be wise to keep your hands to yourself in this area. The babes haven't quite learned their manners yet and tend to taste every new thing they see. They can be pushy to new people, so stand your ground. They'll learn, eventually... ;)

When trustworthy, foals and pups are allowed to roam the hills with an adult. They are easily introduced into independence and relying on the land.

Heartwood: Landmarks and Sam, the Caretaker

Postby Northstar. » Mon Apr 18, 2011 3:09 pm

Landmarks
Northwind Lighthouse and the Heartwood's Stables
As you trek through the grasslands of this quiet place, you notice the faint smell of salt and ocean. Wind beats against your face and grass brushes against you as you crest the hill. Freedom fills your chest and a sense of life trickles into you. You close your eyes and turn your face to the sky, letting this strange feeling wash over you. All you hear is the whooshing of the wind and the gentle waters running against the shore, and faintly, the soft pounding of horses hooves and canine paws across fresh earth. When you next open your eyes, you take in the structure in the distance: an old lighthouse, a protector of the lost at sea, nestled in the cove. This is the Heartwood's Stables, a place of those that will never be forgotten.

Strangely, one of the main landmarks of Heartwood is an abandoned lighthouse, where the caretaker of the creatures lives; the stables also connect to the side and there is a small fenced area for unruly younglings. The people who built the place left long ago on boats across the ocean, and every night Sam lights up the lantern, in hopes to lead lost sailors back to land.

Whisper Cove
On the far side of Heartwood is an old abandoned dock. Its solid concrete dips into the ocean, disappearing under the blue waters. No one knows how long it has been on the shore, or who built it.
When the moon is high in the night, and when the air is cold, some say you can see a shadow of a horse staring off into the distance, waiting for his lost rider to return.

The Heartwood Tree
Named for the heart carved into the pale, near-pink flesh of the tree.
The Heartwood tree is one of the few great weeping giants that tower over the plains of Heartwood. It blooms flowers the color of fire at the first rain in the heat of summer. The leaves of this tree never fall and the bark never breaks. It comforts the lost and protects the broken. It is a tree made for love and by love, forever lonely in the heart of the land.

Sam, the Caretaker of Heartwood
Samuel Greenway is the caretaker of the Heartwood's Stables. You can often find him at the top of the lighthouse, looking out over the cove with an air of awe. Not often will you find this guy laying around; he's either out tending to his colony of animals or exploring the lands of Heartwood. No one really knows his age, and he won't tell you because he likes to keep a little mystery surrounding him. Don't let the blonde hair or aloof attitude fool you, this guy is smart, even if he sometimes blurts out nonsense. If he lets out a particularly unmanly scream, please remind him that he is indeed manly and should not sound as such. XD

Cliff as a neko. By Nyx. THANK YOU!
Cliff is a troublemaker, pure and simple. He enjoys frightening old ladies, goldfish and mailmen. On warm days he can be found lounging in the grass nearest the lighthouse, or sitting on the old dock. He has a bad habit of scratching curtains and furniture, and besides his wild streak, he's pretty sweet and cuddly.

ordered from River cat, thank you!
Tucker
Aged Four and a half years.
Tucker is a subdued and disinterested dog. He doesn't find the joy in romping with his fellow canines, and often sits in the shade to watch their silly games of tag. He often wanders through the hills of Heartwood at the heels of his two-legged companion, Sam.

Ahanu, the first stallion in Heartwood.
He's a silly, young thing, trying to impress the mares. He tends to nibble on clothes.

Ordered art from Hidden Insanity.
Nhyr
Where he walks the earth cracks and trembles with cold.
Where he breathes the air shimmers and shakes with power.
Where he lives the life of his enemies wither.
Where he stays the lives of brethren thrive.

This fantastical buck is rarely seen in Heartwood. We aren't quite sure where he goes or who he meets. Never has Sam seen him during the summer months and during spring and fall you may be lucky to catch a glimpse of him. Winter is his time; he wanders the frozen grounds of the valley, in the dead of night with the moonlight glimmering off of pure white snow. Sam knows he isn't a social animal, as he rarely lingers around the other beasts of our sanctuary. I've heard rumors that he possesses great power, but have yet to see if it's true. Only time will tell.

This is Dolly. She a sweet lil bunny that hops around Heartwood like she owns the place. She can be a little stuck-up, but she's so cute that she's usually forgiven very quickly.

This is Fawn. I adopted her. Isn't she cute?
Art of Fawn
This is the original Fawn.
Fawn is a skittish, shy sweetheart. She can be nervous and jittery and is easily spooked, but after a few days she will warm up to you.

Kaliste

Postby Northstar. » Sat May 05, 2012 4:29 am

Image
Kaliste, by Dia.

Kaliste is a sweet, soft hearted mare with a talent for happiness. She can cheer just about anyone up with a swish of her tail and a gentle nudge of her nose. She's docile and spook-free and loves to roll in the grass on the hillside.

Name: Kaliste
Gender: Mare
Personality: Kaliste is sweet and soft-hearted. Overall she is a generally happy equine with a penchant for being on the optimistic side. One of her tactics for cheering someone up would be to nibble at their hair and nudge them with her nose. She is a very docile sweetheart and is not easily spooked. One of her favorite things to do in Heartwood is to roll in the grass on the hillside.
History:
Kaliste was abandoned by her previous owner, and not in a place you would think. Somehow, mysteriously, she appeared right smack in the middle of a large, bustling city, walking past cars and people on cell-phones as if it were an everyday occurrence. A rescue group brought her in and adopted her out to Heartwood, where she now happily lives in the company of her new family.
