The Nanwe Stables {Posting Encouraged}

Home of my horses from Equi Isles

Smoke rises from a hill near the edge of the Nanwe lands, near Kushistan and the calmest and deepest section of the inlet and as you go closer to inspect you realise that the hill itself is a house, domed and covered with wildflowers. Around it run a number of horses, wild in nature but well looked after and in the stable behind it are some injured horses which are still recovering. A woman comes out and walks over to you, patting down her white robes and fiddlling with the swirling embroidery of rich green and brown which decorated the cuffs of her sleeves. The hem had the same embroideries and softly brushed against the ground.

"I am Amaya, I am a healer of both human and beast, these horses here are those who decided to stay once I healed them," She paused, "Is there anything I can help you with before I leave again? I rarely stay here and often journey all over the island looking for horses and people in need of help."

Deep within the forests of Nanwe lie the remains of a civilization long lost a testament to how nature reclaims all that man has taken form her, a proof that in the end nature will always win.

In the western cliff-faces are multiple openings to the Mabanu caves, which are rumored to run underneath much of Nanwe and perhaps most of the island. There is one entry to these caves which is on top of the cliffs, the only entrance which a horse can reach, but few horses journey into the caves. They are a maze walled with ancient and terrifying carvings and the remains of those who became lost down there. But from those who have traveled far enough into the caves there has been rumors of giant cities, lit by glowing runes and luminous mosses. Whether these rumors are true, none know.

To the east is Magburaka Port. This city has long since been overgrown but from the see all can see the spiralling white marble towers encircled with vines, and the streets now paved with grass and shrubs. It shines brightly between the dark green leaves. However once inside it is eerily quiet, and many leave early due to feelings of unease.

Amaya's Stallions


Vesperus is Amaya's first horse and has a wild disposition. He doesn't trust humans but has come to love Amaya and will protect her with his life.

As Amaya took the first steps towards a new world a black horse appeared out of the mist limping badly on one leg.
Amaya gasped and rushed over to it, dodging its teeth and hooves as it tried to keep her away. She grasped the injured leg gently and it went still, afraid of the pain that would come if she squeezed. She didn't. It turned to watch her with one bright blue eye as she fumbled with her bag, pulling out a few herbs and some bandages.
“Poor thing, I'm afraid I don't usually treat animals but I can adjust.” Amaya said in a calming tone as she bandaged the leg, “You truly are a beautiful stallion, the gold and the blue on that black.”
She finished and stepped back. The horse went to bolt but stumbled and fell. Amaya ran over and sat beside it, gently stroking its flank.
“My black wind, you'll have to stay with me for a while, and go slowly,” she said, “But I had better give you a name... My Vesperus.”

Wayra is a fun-loving horse which can bring a smile to anyone's face, even the most violent of horses seem to take a shine to him and it is in this way he has saved Amaya from trouble numerous times.

The fog lifted and the wind picked up, Amaya pulled her cloak in tight around her, glad she was almost home. A horse seemed to materialise out of the fog, its white and grey coat having offered it perfect camouflage. It neighed when it realised she had seen it and began to prance around her, a winding swirling dance which seemed to whip up the breezes, she laughed. Suddenly it stumbled landing heavily on its chest and the spell was broken.
Amaya rushed forward, carefully straightening and bandaging the leg as she gently murmured, "You need to be more careful, come home with me, I'll get this fixed, my playful wind, my Wayra."

Fai-Nofre

Scared of water, the dark and heights due to an unfortunate event when he was a foal (see Hirondelles story) Fai-Nofre loves warm dry and sunny places, which means he travels a lot to the distant deserts in other regions on Equi Isles. He is incredibly vain and will always try to lord it over any horses around him. Even though he rarely spends time in Nanwe he does still consider Amaya a close friend and is always ready to help her out whenever she comes his way.

Matlal is a finicky horse who likes everything to be in its place and to be neat and tidy. He only gets along with horses who take good care of appearances thus like Fayruz most of Amaya's horses. When not back in his wild home Matlal likes helping Amaya tidy and organise her small stables and gardens.

Amaya's Mares

Fayruz is the daughter of Vesperus, one can tell by her nature. But though she is proud like her sire she does get along with humans quite well. She is very vain and loves the attention others give her for her beauty. For all that though she is not afraid to carry packs should Amaya ask, something her sire never brings himself down to.

Amaya's Mythic Stallions

Kanja

Kanja is playful to the extreme and it is not unusual for his games to lead to someone getting lost or hurt (often himself) but he never means for it to happen. He is extremely mischievous in his playfulness, loving to trick people, and this is often what gets him into trouble. His sire is Wayra, but not even Wayra knows this is so.

Amaya was collecting herbs when she heard the sound of a horse in pain. It was a sound she had come to recognise too well. Without a second though she swung herself up onto Wayra's back (he had been keeping her company) and galloped in the direction of the sound. Wayra, hearing it too, went as fast as he could between the trees, suddenly serious and focused, his feet seemed almost to not touch the ground as he ran with the wind.
They reached the coast and saw the horse, half out of the water and bellowing its pain. It was coated in sand, so much so that its colours were not apparent. Its head fell to the sand and it lay still. Amaya leaped off of Wayra, fearing for the worst, but it was still breathing when she reached it. She thought for a moment of pulling it out of the water, then she saw the strong fish-like tail, sliced and bleeding into the seawater. This was not going to be easy to heal.

Amaya's Mythic Mares

Hirondelle

Hirondelle is a caring horse who shares Amaya's wish to take care of all those in need of help. She is a very small horse and is barely able to lift Amaya in flight, but this hardly matters due to Amaya's strong fear of heights. When not helping out Hirondelle is shy and often folds her wings in tight to try and make herself seem smaller.

Amaya followed Fayruz through the forest as the mare led her to somewhere, she wasn't exactly sure where the mare was taking her but she knew it was important. They reached the cliffs and Fayruz looked over to the waters below. Reluctantly Amaya came closer to the edge and looked over to, it took her a while to realise what Fayruz was looking at, down on the ledge below was a foal. It was barely old enough to be away from its mother, yet there it was, standing on the cliff face. Amaya stepped back from the edge, warring with herself.
A horse emerged from the trees and nuzzled her shoulder. Amaya turned without thinking and patted the nose, then her eyes widened. The horse in front of her was barely an adult, grey, blue and plainly quite shy, she had seen this mare from a distance before, and as then the huge bat like wings amazed her. The new mare stepped over to the edge and looked down to the foal, then back at Amaya, she dipped her head and spread her wings, an obvious invitation.
"I-I can't." Amaya said softly.
The horse nuzzled her again as the tiny whinny floated up from below. Amaya steeled herself and hopped on the mare's back, closing her eyes and holding on tight. As the mare leaped Amaya's eyes flung open and she began to hyperventilate. They landed in the cave which opened to the ledge and Amaya tumbled off. She tried to calm herself down for the sake of the foal gently she lifted it and placed it over the mares neck. One more scary flight and they were on the narrow beach below, but tide was soon to come in. Luckily Kanja had arrived and Amaya and the foal got a ride home, the mare turned up soon after, exhausted and Amaya gave her a stall for the night.
