i can talk about shuò and gong wu in more elaborate (and confusing) ways... it is trew! for this message, i actually planned to write more about them in general, but i will focus on the lore that's strictly related to this piece!

imo, shuò and gong wu's relationship begins with the immortal shuò's curiosity for the mortal gong wu and his grief, and continues with gong wu's acceptance of that curiosity. as they get to know each other better, that curiosity turns into love on both sides.
the love shuò feels is specifically encompassing. he loves gong wu on all sides─he loves gong wu's grief, fake smile, and mortality. but that mortality scares him too─eventually gong wu will succumb to his mortality, and shuò will have to accept that.
but what if he didn't accept it? what if he couldn't accept it?
my answer to the "how does your fable deal with being stressed or in a high stress situation?" lore prompt touches on that, as well as the themes present in kett's art.

kett's art brings up an interesting question, and gong wu's own perspective: what if gong wu was the one who stopped accepting shuò's actions?
even if shuò offered him immortality, gong wu wants to "live life organically" (source: kett). even if he knows shuò feels grief just as deeply, even if he knows shuò desires him desperately (hence shuò's intense gaze here), gong wu wants to accept death when it comes for him.
but when a god sets his gaze on you so reverently like this, how could you refuse him? so gong wu can only look away and smile, hesitating but carefully cradling the mortality (symbolized by the apple) he has.
