Neveya’s mind was buried deep in the book she was reading learning even more about her magic. It was full of not only facts but stories of the lives of death storkies. What she would do to be able to meet another death storkie, to help guide her on her path of magic, some sort of mentor. As she read on, her mind began to wander, would things have been so hard if she’d had another death storkie to turn to? Someone to guide her through the tough times and even just someone to tell her that it wasn’t her fault that the other storkies were superstitious. Elara has always been a wonderful friend, and Lunar magic is quite similar to Death magic, sharing similar roots, but it just wasn’t ridiculed like death was… It seemed as though no one cared that Elara was a Lunar storkie, and perhaps they didn’t. That sounded like a dream for Neveya. She looked over to the scarf she had hanging on her wall, Elara had given that to her when they were only young. Despite the fact that Neveya couldn’t quite remember what year this particular memory was, she knew it was her birthday, and just like every other year, only her and Elara. But by the way that Elara was beaming, Neveya could tell that whatever the gift was, Elara was proud of it. She’d painstakingly wrapped it in a stunning black wrapping paper, finished off with a shiny silver bow on top. Elara nudged the box forward with her nose “Go on, open it!” Elara was so excited that she could barely stand still. .
As Neveya lifted the lid, she squealed with joy. “Elara! But this one’s your favourite?! Why are you giving it to me?!” Neveya picked it up out of the box. It was a beautiful black and grey almost smoky looking fabric, Elara used to wear it to school from time to time and everytime she did, Neveya almost couldn’t take her eyes off it.
Playfully Elara replied “Guess it’s your favourite now!” grinning, Elara snatched the empty box away from Neveya, calling out behind her “No backsies!”
Neveya bounded after her.
Neveya smiled at the sweet memory, despite finding it very hard to make friends throughout all school, she wouldn’t give Elara up for any of them. Neveya had a habit of keeping her struggles to herself but some how Elara always managed to support her right when she needed it. The two had grown up together and stood by each other through thick and thin. Eventually the other kits just flat out refused to accept Neveya no matter how hard Elara fought. So she ended up being homeschooled, but she would still walk with Elara to the end of their street before school each morning. As she watched Elara grow, she often found herself wishing she was some other magic, so she could join in with everyone else. Even now Elara was her only friend, but she had grown okay with that, and she knew that no amount of friends could replace one Elara. At last she heard Elara’s knock at her door, Neveya called out, “Come on in Elara!”
Elara’s head poked around the corner, “Hi hi, how’s the magic going?” Elara smiled.
"It's going well, I think I'm beginning to have a sense of death to be honest… which is what this book says comes first? Hey Elara, do you remember when you gave me that scarf?"
Elara let out a quiet chuckle "I do, you used to stare at that scarf every day back in school"
Neveya laughed "How could I not! Look at it!" "That's why I knew that you'd be ecstatic to own it! I also knew you well enough to know that you would have tried to give it back."
Neveya playfully frowned, "No I wouldn't," she replied sarcastically.
"So of course I had to run off with the box too." They both laughed, remembering the fierceness of the chase after.
"I honestly think that was the day I realised that you're stuck with me, and I'm definitely sticking around" Elara playfully nudged Neveya.
"The only reason it's up on my wall now is that I'm too scared to take it out because It means so much to me." Neveya sighed. "It was also what lead to me getting my cloak that I love so dearly, because without either I just don't feel complete. Thank you Elara…"
"Stop it you, you're making me tear up!"
Neveya laughed, "Alright, alright I'll stop getting all sappy!"
