Ok, so. I'm not going to lie, I love wolves and they are my favourite animal. However I happen to be an all round animal lover (I'm just not fond of spiders and monkeys)and a bookworm, so since I love animals I've read many books on these subjects and I want to correct/add to a couple of points.

Firstly, when wolf populations go up obviously the deer populations go down, HOWEVER, wolves tend to only go after the weak and sickly deer thus weeding out specimens that would weaken the overall deer population. When the deer populations go down really low the wolves can't get enough food and THEIR population goes down accordingly, its the age-old dance between predator and prey, the only problem with this? Humans. We push wolves into smaller territories and since we also hunt deer we wrongly assume that wiping out wolf populations will bring the deer back and cause no side affects.....it really makes me question our brain capacity, how can anyone think something so ridiculous? But I digress, this causes the wolf population to go down (and obviously the deer increase) but now their natural predator is gone and they begin to overpopulate and now the wolves that would naturally take care of the deer population have been killed off.....its horrible and screws up the entire ecosystem. Just think of it! The deer eat all the grass, the bugs that rely on the grass die off, the birds and reptiles that rely on the bugs have no food and die and it goes on and on.

Secondly, I'm a "hunter" of sorts myself. Truth be told I like the feeling of being a predator in the wild and loathe the actual killing part, but I can tell you without hesitation that not all shots are kill shots, in fact, when dealing with a highly intelligent and mobile animal like a wolf its not that easy to land an instant death shot, and don't kid yourself, wolves can escape fast. Besides, the people who purposely go hunt wolves for their pelt definitely wouldn't be shooting the pelt and marring it, they usually resort to poison and traps which are just as bad (in my opinion) as suffocation/drowning. Its still a slow and prolonged death, and for true pelt hunters, the one they commonly use. Its the farmers and "overpopulation" shooters who try shooting them.

Thirdly, with wolves they really do have a lower chance of escaping humans who hunt them. They live on land, like us humans, and where they go, we can go. Sharks on the other hand live underwater and are actually impossible to track if they just disappear under the water, or at least, its much more difficult.

As far as sharks are concerned its an awful thing to just kill them for one part and then allow them to die.....I don't condone it in any way but why don't they just kill them after they take the fin? whats the point in just dumping them back in the water? (I wasn't clear on that point so....does anyone know why? is it just laziness?) But as far as only taking one part is concerned, elephants are massacred for their ivory tusks, tigers for their pelts, and many other animals are hunted by poachers, rankly I think its unfair to say that wolf lovers are oblivious to all other animals plights. I think that the people who are aware of the plight wolves are in, generally know about others. I don't know. Any other thoughts?

well yes im a wolf lover to (favorite animal) and yes it does effect the cycle of life and most of use do love other or all animals and stand up for them but this argument was already fought and theres really no point to the argument because people wont change sides.... soo yhea and no i dont know why they dump them back in.... mabye because they want to watch there "prey" die or they just use the fin... but please dont start this argument again.

No offense, but sharks aren't really nice and gentle animals. Sure it's horrible that they have their fins cut off, but I'd much rather worry about wolves more then sharks.

And I'm sure you don't like sharks, am I correct? You're probably one of those people if you saw one in a tank, you'd scream? Yeah. It's the people who don't know anything about sharks, and are just scared of them and dislike them for no reason really, that say stuff like that. I'm not being offensive, but it's just annoying when people say stuff like that.

Hunting doesn't affect wolf populations by much. I would much rather have wolves extinct than have sharks go through so much pain. Then maybe people would shut up about how the cute little wolf got hunted. Sorry, i'm just so sick of it. You said that sharks aren't nice or gentle animals; wolves are really no different.

No, I'm am not one of 'those people'. I never said I don't like sharks, did I? I am simply stating that I don't understand why people keep saying the wolves are fine, they are just shot and killed and feeling so bad for the sharks. Sharks, as I said before, aren't really gentle animals...they are sharks.

This is what makes me upset, people saying they'd rather have all the wolves go extinct just so sharks don't have there fins cut off. Pretty sad if you ask me. Maybe if all they all went extinct people would shut up about poor little sharks.

The worst part, to me, is the fact that they waste the entirety of the animal. I would be 100% fine with shark-hunting if you actually use the entirety of the shark to a higher use. But here? It is simply awful. That beautiful animal was killed just for a single little fin, while so much else of it could be put to use! Such as its oil, skin, and jaws/teeth. Plus more, most likely.

Think of the Indians in Alaska. They kill beluga whales. However, they only kill one each year, so that they do not over-hunt, and they use every last bit of the animal they can. I find these perfectly humane.

I have no problem with the hunting of wolves if the hunter is defending his/her livestock, or has some other logical reason to do so.

Thank you, wibeke, for alerting the public of this matter. It is a very true, very sad tale that most never get a chance to hear of.

Neither you, nor anybody else has the right to say that sharks are ruthless, blood-thirsty, or any such nonsense that the media has forced into our minds. Other then humans, I doubt any animal truely is. Sharks, when they rarely do attack, attack to defend themselves or to keep themselves alive. Do you think they just swim around killing things because they feel like doing so? We are the ones pushing nature past it's limits, and nature fights back.

By the way, just out of curiosity, why is it that you would "much rather worry about wolves more then sharks"? Are wolves, perhaps, better then sharks in your mind? If they are, I highly suggest you read a book or two on sharks, and then make up your mind. ;-)

Please stop putting words into my mouth. I have not said anything like that. I only said I believe they are not the nicest creatures I know of.
