WHY PEOPLE ARE QUITTING CS- A Discussion

I'm surprised, but quite thankful this discussion is so popular. I think 100% something has to change. Just because this is an old-school forum board doesn't mean things can't be changed and upgraded for the better! I have been stalking this forum periodically since page 20ish and have seen so many amazing ideas. I think the whole community has really pulled through on this, and the fact this conversation is still trending hours later to such a high degree says something. We, the players/userbase, want new/better/more content. I think that is a pretty reasonable request.

I'm one of the many people that pop in and out of this game for one reason: it's boring and so hard to trade. I want to collect EVERY pet in this game. I do not care if the staff have gone on record and said that store pets do not count towards completion; to me, THEY DO. But because of how rare they are, my only options are to: play/pay offsite games to trade, make art (which I'm not good at), or trade half my collection for one freaking pet. That is my main reason for not being a consistent user, and I know my opinion/story is not unique. It may be repetitive to what others have said in this thread, but this is a discussion, so I just had to throw in my reasons as well. Sidenote: I am one of those individuals who has no life and can spend most of my day on here, and I STILL find it incredibly difficult to trade (work-from-home perks). I saw it mentioned pages back, so I thought I should say it. It really sucks that since I have very few skills, I cannot just grind or draw my way to get rares/rarer pets.

I've made a few suggestions on other threads previously, but they have been more or less regurgitated onto this one. This is a good thing, of course, since it means others feel the same as I do, and I am super happy that this conversation is finally getting a lot of attention.

Despite the joys that this website brings me, I do have one major gripe. Pet and Item value.
For me, my biggest gripes of this website is how unbelievably difficult it is to understand pet and item value. It’s like learning a different language. People tend to take “bad” trades personally as though it’s an attack on their person, When in actuality the trading system is just so convoluted and unintuitive that individuals send trades without fully grasping the concept of pet value.

honestly agree! i've interacted more on the site than you have no doubt, and i've taken long breaks from cs. yet i keep coming back! this site still continues to hold my attention and i honestly feel like people are asking SO much of this website that it wasn't DESIGNED to be. it was designed to be a forum and pet adopting site.

to retouch on this subject, while yes some of the requests are frivolous and def a stretch to get added onto cs, a lot of the ideas are quality of life for exactly the idea of this being a forum and pet adopting site imo

Random thought for more engagement but there could be a type of daily login every month. The number of days you log in potentially corresponds with an item, pet, or some 3rd thing. idk and no one would know until they logged in every day that month.

The problem for computer science students is that (for most) in order to graduate you have to have completed an internship or co-op, and there are not enough positions to go around. Would it be wonderful to intern for Google or Microsoft? Sure, but they don't hire more than a handful of computer science interns a year, and that leaves students setting their sights on something more obtainable. Most computer science internships end up happening through companies barely anybody has heard of, but since there are so many candidates, everyone is highly competitive, and to abuse your internship is a surefire way to be barred from graduating and blacklisted in the industry.

On top of all of this, a good portion of computer science students are going into game design (and that's, somehow, even harder to get a vaguely related internship in), so a site like Chicken Smoothie offering an internship? That's a dream position right there because not only do you get to work on a 'game', but you also get real-world experience with coding a site, and that's very valuable.

Ahh okay, that makes more sense then. I'll default to your expertise here then and say that yes, interns would be for the most part trustworthy because they don't want to put their careers on the line. Leaving it as a rotating 1-2 year long internship would also help because then you don't have to worry about "oh, Person A has graduated and is searching for a paid job in the field now, so we've lost them"

For many years I have seldom traded, and I have avoided the forums (in fact this is my first time posting in another individual’s thread ever in my 10 years on this website) And although being an artist, I have yet to try to make art on this website. But I come back frequently to enjoy the small things. I love to look at other artist’s work, I enjoy the designs of the pets, and lastly the events truly bring me a sort of nostalgic glee. So then, why is it that over the years I have watched the community crumble, when this website still brings me the same amount of happiness that I had when I made my account in 2013? Is it the expectations that there should be a degree of change and advancement within a website of this age? So what is it about my experience that differs so much from everyone else’s?

I totally agree!
As someone who tends to avoid the forums and lightly draws, barely comes on to actually trade tons, I agree the system of pets and value is so messy. Probably one of the biggest reasons people quit is because of not understanding the super confusing and constantly changing worth. They pick a favorite pet, try their best to trade and get it, spend weeks trading, can't understand the worths and how to get rarer to get that pet, go searching for answers, find nothing, give up, quit. It's nice to see all the talk on changing that system and making it easier to get worth without simply sitting around for years wait for your worthless pets to be worth something. Maybe that's something that can be changed for the better ^^

Seeing so many people throwing their opinions and suggestions here and seeing how many of you genuinely care gives me hope that change will come at some point. Though unless Tess and Nick decide to actually act on anything or even entertain the idea is a whole other thing entirely. If they're not on board with any of it than all of this discussion is pointless, I hate to say. :c

I personally dont like the limited time store items. They used to do this once in a few years, but now they do it very often. It can be hard to get c$ if you dont want to spend real money. I know the site needs money to stay online, but this is a game for children. They often dont get permission, so they have to trade to get c$.
With this economy on cs, it is also hard to knock things off your wl. The values are through the roof, and it will only get worse, i fear, with store pets never being rereleased.
The value of the limited time store items will also go up fast once they retire.
I mainly focus on my hoard, i basicly gave up on my wl, since people expect insane things in return for it.
