The colored stars would be rainbow, gold, silver, and bronze. (The hues could be similar to the ducks in that one event.) They would have a metallic sheen to further distinguish them from having anything to do with the rarity bar colors. To help colorblind users, the gold star would be the darkest, then the silver, then the bronze one would be the lightest, so that you could tell even without the color hues.
I like your idea of contrasting shades to help distinguish from rarity bars and also to help with colourblindness! Maybe the easiest thing for this though would be to have all stars the same but with little numbers or letters in? When creating the list you could have a drop down list of numbers 0-9 and A-Z letters (maybe a few specific symbols too like ! and ?) as well as the option to leave it blank which would be the default.
Maybe there could be a bar added to the top of the archives alongside the search functions that reads 'Add to Wishlist __' with the blank being the drop down list that allows you to select which wishlist you are adding to. That way you still have the one-click to add to wishlist, and can change between them just as easily as you can change pages in the archive. When a pet is on a wishlist, the button would stay there
as well as the 'remove from wishlist' button (aka not just be replaced by it) so that you can easily swap the wishlist that the pets are on.
Pet groups could be trade locked according to the symbols on the stars too - if you select wishlist lock there would then be a further checkbox selection where you select which wishlists will be able to offer on the pets.
