I don't have much to add right now besides just wanting to chime in that... based on my real life experiences, this is DEFINITELY an issue with people speaking FACE-TO-FACE. And I'm not just talking about one-off experiences or a few "bad apples" or honest misunderstandings. I've seen this happen for people ranging in age from little kiddies to college students to fully grown adults old enough to have grandkids.
So I'm not surprised that there's a heck of a lot (in terms of raw quantity, NOT percentage! I'm sure the percentage of honest CS users is still super high! But CS, for all that it's shrinking, is still... big. We still got a big number of users lol) of lie by omission happening on a site with CS's userbase where people, by default, don't run into each other in person.
edit: In other words... it's sweet that we trust that others are telling the full, unedited truth, but that's not how Life works. Of course this applies to everyone, but I'm particularly focusing on users who aren't in positions of power, because most of us realize that people in power only say so much while simultaneously thinking that our peers/regular people like us will say more. That's not always the case, and when it is, the difference in how much information is revealed isn't always that big. Maybe I'm cynical, but if the amounts of salt with which I view the words of people in power and the words of people not in power are pretty similar in size. (Funnily enough, I also try to view the best in people. I suppose I'm a whole bunch of walking contradictions)
Oooookay I think I'm done editing. I think.
Nope I lied. Final edit: When I said "it's sweet" I didn't mean to come across as condescending. I meant something more along the lines of "it's genuinely heartwarming and I have hope for humanity", ironically
