implement item labels

Postby bugbaby » Mon Sep 15, 2025 8:50 pm

Trading items on chicken smoothie is not great - obviously there are no rarity labels which makes deciphering "worths" difficult, but items often have nondescriptive names/names shared with other items, making the search engine less useful, there is a severe lack of trade data just because less users are interested in items than pets/items are hard to trade which creates a frustrating loop, and so on. I pop in and out to the fair trade thread to give advice and have been doing so on and off since 2020 and a strong majority of the trades that sit for a long time and/or go unanswered are item trades. People don't like to trade items if they don't know what exact value they're letting go when they make a trade.

I am aware the idea to implement literal item rarities has already been rejected by CS Staff which is why I feel like a compromise solution could be labelling items based on their source. I use the CS extension many other users use to help with trades and I feel like it helps immensely not just with pet trades but with item trades - specifically tagging if items are currently being sold in the store, are retired store items, and tagging them with their year. Before this extension I remember having to check each individual item date via image link, and that still doesn't tell you whether or not an item was just a free hand-out, had been in the store since 2009, used to cost c$, etc. Those three pieces of information would probably be enough for the community to come to a more defined consensus on item trades with clear labels, perhaps in addition to a label saying if something was free or not (most items are free, so maybe no labelling if an item was free and a special tag if an item was a token/cost tokens during an event).

Absolute support to this!

I feel a tad bit more confident with items now using that same extension, it really does improve a LOT with chicken smoothie far beyond minimal yet useful info on items. However, it isn't great that we have to use third-party code for QoL and in my opinion essential information as it could lead to security risks in the future, which I greatly hope for an addition like this suggestion in the future.

I'd love to see what they are from, when they are from and how you obtained them with ease, I'm not even all that certain what all items were token items or not from events these days as I missed a lot over the years, which makes me struggle to think of an OK offer when trading. I do not want to offer too little for a token item you had to scrub three frogs at noon for a chance to get it, or offer too much for something you 25 of for free just clicking the button.
