Tolous stood under an old oak tree, watching a butterfly dance in the air. Even as Pride came closer, she did not take her eyes off it.
"Do you see this beautiful blue butterfly?" she asked with a pleased smile.
Pride looked at the fluttering insect. Tolous was apparently trying to show off her so-called wisdom—again.
But this time, he would outsmart her.
"Blue?" He shook his head, a smug grin on his face. "Tolous, you are wrong. This butterfly is clearly red."
The lead mare raised an eyebrow. "Red? It is bright blue."
"Nonsense!" Pride said loudly as a few other equids came closer, curious. "I am an expert in colors! This is clearly a strong, powerful red - the color of strength and pride!"
Tolous stared at him for a moment, then snorted. "Pride… you are colorblind, aren't you?"
A few of the equids gasped. Pride blinked, offended.
"Me?! Colorblind?! What a ridiculous idea! My vision is sharper than anyone else's! I see colors in their purest form! And I say - this butterfly is red."
The herd started whispering. Some tried to stay serious, but the situation was too funny. Even the young ones giggled quietly.
Tolous took a step closer and looked him in the eye. "How do you explain that everyone else sees it as blue?"
Pride opened his mouth - then closed it again. His pride fought against reality. He, the shining star among all other Equids, could not be colorblind!
He searched for an excuse. "Maybe… maybe you all are colorblind. Yes! Maybe your vision is wrong. Maybe I am the only one who sees the true color!"
Tolous rolled her eyes.
"Of course, Pride. The whole world is wrong, and only you are right."
The herd burst into laughter. Pride felt his face grow hot. He was a proud Wild Mountain Equid—and now everyone was laughing at him because of a silly butterfly!
But instead of admitting defeat, he lifted his head, flared his nostrils, and declared, "Well, it does not matter. The color of a butterfly is unimportant. There are more important things in life, like… like lunchtime."
Some choked on their own laughter, while Tolous just stared at him in disbelief. "Lunch. Time…"
Pride nodded, satisfied. "Exactly."
And with that, he walked away - straight into a large root, sending him crashing to the ground.
While the bright blue butterfly landed right on his nose.
