The Bakuilai are an ancient, giant breed whose origins are up for interpretation. They're mystical beasts whose depth of power is unknown. What is known about them though, is that there isn't many of them, less then a few hundred across the entire planet. Their eyes are portals to other dimensions, almost appearing stain glass-like and somewhat foggy. It is rumored for their mouth to be an inter-dimensional portal to match their eyes but many who visit the Bakuilai and are blessed to be able to see their true power often don't return. They are often referred to being the "Guardians" of this plane of existence.
Their magic being located in their eyes lead to poor, almost non-existent eyesight. Despite being nearly bling and having no nose, the Bakuilai are not in any threat as they have no natural predators due to their large size. They're very peaceful and are herbivorous and rarely leave their den. Due to the centuries and millennium under their belts, the gentle beasts are incredibly wise though they do not speak. While they're capable of speech, they never do as they don't feel the need to. Their breeding season comes around only once every thousand years and even then it is rare for any embryos to make it to full term and are actually born.
Despite not having any natural or unnatural predators besides rogue Bakuilai (almost the chance of that happening is <0.1%), their two independently moving tails are razor sharp and the "holes" on their sides are vents for hot air to be forcefully expelled from. The air is scalding hot and bubbling with steam. Bakuilai are covered entirely in rock-like scales, another defense mechanism yet to succumb to evolution. The vents on the side of their face are used for echolocation to deal with their loss of ears.
Not many have seen an actual Bakuilai, their existence is shared through word of mouth, folktales spread through curious cats or those looking to escape. Many do not know of their existence, but ever rogue and powerful felines do. They're aware that the power of such beasts is not one to mess with and do not want it to fall into bad hands. The Bauilai are sweet, docile creatures who share their powers with very very few. Over the centuries only a few handfuls of cats have stumbled across one and even less have actually been blessed by their power.
Find a Bakuilai is quite the hefty task. One might think that since they are such a massive size that they'd be an easy beast to find. But, if one does not want you to be aware of their presence, you would never know they're there. Their rock-like scales aren't used in just defense but also to help blend into their terrain (they're much smoother and fish-like for the aquatic Bakuilai), and they camouflage to the color of their surroundings.
They're a friendly, easy-going mystery who know all yet would much prefer to sleep until those few worthy cats are in dire need of help.
