❦ Scratch sniffs at the air around her, noting the mouse she has been following, taking in the deep scents of the wilderness. There are signs of cats nearby not too long ago, and she takes heed of this, her steps soft and her eyes carefully tracking the ground in front of her to watch for any tall-foot traps.
She had been caught in one of those once, she grimaces thinking about it. It took years to get the feeling back in her tail tip after that… incident. She shakes her head at this thought, and turns back to the mouse. She lifts her head again, and the smell is far closer, but is now plagued by the smell of an enemy cat, and the cat is moving fast.
Still, the pains in her stomach gnaw at her, she can’t remember a time when it was this bad, she glances around, stress of the day ahead without any food for her journey is not a pretty endeavor. She paws at the ground, contemplating her choices. She decides to continue pursuing the mouse, the other cats can deal.
Watching carefully over her shoulder, she continues to stalk the mouse for some time, following it carefully through the brush, her eyes glancing from side to side, ensuring the mouse has no escape. “One… two…” she says in a low meow, her whiskers twitch nervously and her stomach churns, “THREE!” she jumps onto the mouse, sinking in her claws and her teeth, securing her meal.
“Y’know, you’d secure a lot more meals if you skipped the whole… counting thing?” a gruff voice sounds behind her, a genuine edge to the voice gives her pause not to run away from the cat.
She turns around slowly, still holding the already mouse in her maw, giving the grey and white cat a ‘What do you know?’ look, still somewhat mistrustful of this small, but strong looking cat.
The cat stays rooted in her spot, still watching Scratch with a small grin on her face, as much a grin as a cat can give anyhow. Scratch backs up nervously, her eyes stuck on the strange cat, trying to plot an escape in her mind.
“I don’t want to take your food.” The cat shakes her head at Scratch, “You did technically steal it from my territory, but I’ll let it slide if you’ll have a conversation with me, and tell me how you got past my patrol.” she offers, lying down and carefully arranging her paws in front of her.
Scratch considers this offer, studying the kind face of the cat in front of her. She decides this is worth the risk, and sits down, putting the mouse between her paws. “I suppose I could tell you a thing or two.” she responds, “I’m Scratch, by the way.” her tone is tepid at best, but with her heart about to explode from her chest, she can’t muster much more than that.
“My name is Fireblossom.” the strange cat responds, “You should probably eat your mouse first, before I steal it back from you.” she jokes, probably a bit too soon.
Scratch doesn’t ask twice and quickly swallows down the mouse, licking her lips after that delicious, hearty meal of a mouse. She stares at Fireblossom, who hasn’t made a move at all since she had laid down.
“They were asleep. I could’ve walked right over them and I doubt they would have awoken.” she says, nervously. She can smell other cats nearby, waiting for their leader to say the word, now that her senses aren’t clouded by hunger they begin to go into overdrive due to alarm.
“You have quite the nose on you, don’t you?” Fireblossom tilts her head, “Are you a kittypet? What brings you here?”
Scratch is shocked at the barrage of questions, but does her best to answer them quickly; “I- I can smell better than all of my family. I don’t know what you mean by kittypet- but I did have a tallfoot who took care of me, I suppose.” She bristles at the last question, but responds anyway, “I am- I left the tallfoot territory after my injury made me impossible to show. I have been struggling to catch these morsels, but I do what I can.”
Fireblossom stares at her for a long time, not uttering a sound, glancing her up and down, deciding if Scratch is telling the truth.
“Are you going to kill me?” Scratch breaks the silence, staring unblinkingly at the cat before her.
The cat in front of her lets out a loud, echoing laugh. “Kill you?” she asks, “Quite the contrary, kitten. I want to offer you a home.”
