The shoreline bustled with activity; people were galloping about the scorching sands, fiddling with cigarettes and rainbow beach balls. There was laughter coming from every direction as people crowded the open sea, clumps of grainy rock stuck between their toes. Some kicked up dust while eating snacks that would soon litter the beach. Others gallivanted around the currents, screaming as they chased fish who slid desperately between holes in the rocks. Meanwhile, I retreated to a craggy slope. This didnβt mean it would finally be silent, however. The oceanβs repeated shift was deafening. I longed for silence.
I rested my eyes upon the great blue as the waves curled over one another. I listened silently as the winds whistled between the rocks. I took a deep breath. A storm was coming. I turned toward the shoreline and stared down, gazing about the hoards of people crowded along the waters. The skies began to grey. I slid down the lumpy, waterworn cliff and tiptoed my way back into the endless waters.
Two of my fatherβs many servants created a rapid current to whisk me back home. I always dreaded the pressure change when headed to deeper waters. His servants ushered me through the palace gate, shoving me desperately as I begrudgingly shuffled between them. I let out a sigh. Hello, home.
We made our way across sections of stone, where several pillars dotted the buildings. I was forced between them, toward the palace, as if I was some kind of prisoner. What a wonderful βWelcome Backβ party my father was throwing. I hobbled between the guards, toward the throne room, as the servants yanked me back and forth. I gave them each a comical glance, then folded my arms away from them and tiptoed toward my father.
βWhere have you been?β his deep, angry voice echoed.
βI was checking the shoreline, sir,β I spoke quietly, dipping my head submissively.
βThen why were you gone for so long? Youβre the only child I was ever able to have. This means you carry my responsibility as well.β His harangue was exasperating--I was gone for 20 minutes--I was just barely able to keep my cool.
βI apologize, sir.β I kept my head down to the floor and knelt. This was why I hated the ocean. My father was too controlling. He wouldnβt even let me have friends.
βYour mother was an ordinary kalon,β he continued, βShe was unable to come down here safely. She wasnβt as much a help to the kingdom as Iβd have liked. I do hope you never become as useless as her.β
He went too far. I grimaced at him, then darted out of the castle, flooding it with ice-cold water. I forced myself into the currents, just barely returning to shore. I stumbled up the crag, and it appeared as though the storm was on my side today. It poured down, scaring away both those against the shoreline and those chasing me. I was free--for now.
