gently rising and falling. the peaks of the hills and valleys were ivory, turned white by an angel’s breath. the willows were elegantly draped with the pearls of winter. it was beautiful. with silver moths adorning the crown of his head, wisps of white froliced just beyond his trembling lips. a gentle tease from the cold, maybe? he hoped so.
the kiss of winter along his cheek made him too numb to feel. everything was spiralling, seeming as though nothing could be touched, not even the enchanting jewels glistening beneath his toes. was he dreaming? if only, it was true.
if only, the screams of his father would flee from his heart and be silenced for a lifetime to come.
but, of course, wishes were cruel.
so, he ran. until he couldn’t go any further.
the blue adorning his lashes were slow as the promise that blossomed in his heart. like a rose flecked with thorns. it was an unspoken mantra, one of how he would go back. but, not now.
he was far too cold.
maybe, a little shut-eye could do the trick. it didn’t seem like a bad idea.
laying his head along the ivory stones that flecked the fields, a shiver trembled in his aching heart. with shadows dancing in his vision, the darkness was soothing to his heart. a manifestation of a dream that rode on a stallion’s back.
he had barely noticed the gentle touch of fingers along his back.
“don’t let dreams take you, sweetheart. it’s not your time yet.”
was she an angel? she must be. the sparkle of her eyes was like a falling star in the night, a whisper that called to him and lifted him from his trance of dreams and nightmares. “i don’t understand.”
“oh, little one, you will. i promise.” a plumy tail tickled his chin, it was a soft embrace he hadn’t felt in so long. but, it didn’t change reality. the truth that he was too cold and how the shadows danced around him, tempting him to sleep.
and sleep, eternally.
“i’m so cold.” the soft melody of weakness was bittersweet, lulling the ache in his heart, but the familiar sting of angry tears came in like the rush of ocean. “it’s alright, just come close, child. let me tell you a story..”
“i’d like that.”
