Tahani’s fingers delicately traced the flowers that decorated the faded red velvet curtains. They were little roses and poppies with, what she imagined, once vibrant green leaves desperately reaching out to touch one another. She found herself smiling at this and whenever her lips curled into a grin her soft yellow freckles rose with them. She was once told that she has a pretty smile. This thought lead back to the poppies and roses. Tahani began to ponder whether or not she could ever be as pretty and soft as those curtains.

“Care to share what you thinkin’ about miss?”

Without turning around, Tahani knew from that hoarse old voice who stood behind her. She was never pleased to be interrupted, especially if she is lost in thought like she was thinking about those flowers. Though secretly, Tahani supposed she could use some company. Her husband, Jax, was drafted into the Royal Guard and since she was unfortunately unable to bear children and it got quiet around her warm little cottage. Her neighbor, the one standing right behind the lovely Tahani at this moment, took pity on the young woman. Once a week not on any certain day, she got she brought some of her flakey, buttery, mouth watering, homemade bread over.

To Tahani’s dismay however, she didn’t smell that recognizable scent, only the musty old smell of her neighbor. She didn’t know her neighbor’s name, nor did anyone that she had spoken to about the matter, as her neighbor was always referred to as Smoky. Perhaps her nickname had to do with her smell.

“I’m just- just thinking,” Tahani half heartedly said. A dark brown stain was on the curtain which made her wonder how long it was sitting there. Was it her fault?

“I think you be losin’ your mind miss. Ever thought of getting back out into da’ world again?”

This grabbed Tahani’s attention. Her golden hair once limp slid across her shoulder as her head shot backwards. “What are you trying to imply?” she calmly whispered.

Smoky, with a yellow tooth grinned replied, “I can’t serve you bread fur da’ rest of your life miss. Besides, I ate’ to see ya’ over here moppin’ around all day,”

With a quiet exhale Tahani gave a reassuring nod. Not to her neighbor, who she strongly disagreed with currently, but a small reassurance to herself. She reminded herself that this women was likely crazy as is when you live alone for years and years on end. Tahani’s stomach tighten as she questioned whether this will occur to herself someday. Perhaps it would be sooner then she would think, but Tahani was too positive to think that way.

The Land of Yaahi is located just past Junni, the city known for its trading ports. Yaahi is smaller then Junni, though a census hasn’t been taken in quite a long time. Junni’s tall buildings seemed to touch the sky versus Yaahi’s small town dotting the landscape with tiny houses. Most either stop at Junni or continue through the continent which means Yaahi wasn’t blessed with the brilliant thinkers once Junni had. If you want to do something with your life, Yaahi wasn’t the place.

This is what Tahani believed and she told herself every single day that once she could manage it she would escape towards Junni and hop on a ship bound towards a new land. But then she met Jax who told her that it was a foolish plan. Tahani believed him after a while, but the determination that bubble up inside of her never let her loose sight of this dream.

Not too many commons folk know what lies beyond the ports, but the sailors are very peculiar. When she and Jax go to the shops, she gets a clear view of the strangers. They have strange accents, probably because instead of ‘ing’ they drop the ‘g’. They also wear clothing Tahani has never seen before, eat foods that look inedible, the list could go on. All Tahani knows of that she wants to join them one day and learn their ways.
