Those who enter the current will flow down the path of many others.
Fight, fight as you wish – the outcome remains the same.
Drown, drown with the rest.

She held a deathly glare in her eyes. She walked disconnected from those around her, like an entity unseen. Her gaze was a strong repellent, keeping both the dogs and sheep at bay. A circle radiated as a barrier around her, similar to a dark halo.

Alira never minded the rumors. The words of others always seemed to go through one ear and out the other. Her mind was focused on her work and rarely strayed.

Alira's family encouraged her to enter the Mage Guild to become a wielder of magic arts. Her aura contained some powerful energy, and if she succeeded she would surely be able to support others in her future. Financially, such a path could pull her family out of poverty. Alira accepted and applied for a position which she later achieved.

Though, as her studies continued – she found a deep interest in curse arts and dark magic. These forms of magic and the resources needed to pursue it were heavily restricted, but with research, Alira discovered ways to work these into her general works.

A dark spell known formally as “Acid Portcullis of the Blood Seer” was mentioned in multiple books, though the process to replicating the spell lacked usable information. Performing this spell would require Alira to incorporate elements she'd learned of elsewhere to fill in the missing aspects of the ritual. However dangerous it may have seemed, she felt an urge to experiment – and thus she planned in secret to perform the spell off the main grounds of the Mage Guild University, in the Sleeping Bog.

When the day came, Alira set out with a pack of resources and items – a book which detailed some necessary steps to the act, a butcher knife and some varying herbs she'd collected from some elemental resource stashes in the main structure of the university. It was nighttime, and Alira managed to sneak past the staff and guardians on campus.

Darkness coated the lands, and Alira was having difficulty watching her steps. She carefully proceeded, as she knew she had to create some distance between her project and the Guild. As she stepped over a long forgotten path, she noticed a glow...

A lone lantern sat upon a tree stump, yet no one appeared to be around. A voice spoke inside Alira’s mind. “Take it.”
Without question or fear, she took the object and continued, using it to light up her path.
She supposed it had been sitting there for some time – as the glow came from a magic source. It wouldn’t be unwise to assume it had kept its brightness over a long period of time, and magic items were common in the academy as well as the grounds nearby.

It was not long before Alira felt she’d ventured far enough to ensure her safety from the academy guardians…

…and so, she began the ritual.

A circle of blood, she drew from herself.
Element placement, as would function in theory.
A concoction of natural resources to provide a (hopefully) more stable outcome…
…and finally, some words documented by the Blood Seer, passed to her through olden resources.

The combination of tools would surely result in the creation of the Acid Portcullis, a clear window with which one can see all other opened zones – if any remained. Its name was determined when the liquid drops over a glassy surface appeared from the first use. This liquid, when touched, would sting the user and even cause terrible burns. It was a repellant to those who would perhaps try to travel through it.

Alira backed away, as the liquid drops dripping to the ground let off a horrid scent.
She did however gaze into the Acid Portcullis… and she saw a strange sight. Two other children about her age appeared to be looking back at her. In confusion, Alira froze. If these were visions of current openings, why were two others locking eyes with her? Why would others happen to be seeing the same sight, the creation of the openings – it couldn’t be coincidence, could it? Who were they?

It was then that Alira noticed a dark shadow approaching. Before she could make any sort of move, the shadow shoved her forward, and she tripped directly into the portal!

What’s happening?
I can’t feel my body.
I can’t feel anything.
But… I’m approaching… something.
I clutch this lantern of light with my eyes closed.
Where will I find myself?
