Re: Sisters of the moon

So, will you accept our offer?” They whispered tauntingly, circling Dolores.
Ribbons of thunder danced across the night sky and a brilliant light split the sky in two, signalling the beginning of a thunderstorm.

Bullets of rain pelted onto her face, soaking her silky plaits, which proceeded to stick to her pale cheeks. “You have a deal,” Dolores responded, holding out her palm.

Swirls of black and white formed on her palm, delicate flakes of white gold and black titanium forging into two thin masquerade-like masks.

Once they were formed Dolores stumbled away, the fresh feeling of adrenaline pumping through her veins as the wet soil beneath her feet coated the hem of her velvet skirt with a thick layer of mud.

“Sister!” Dolores cried, her relived tears blurring her vision, the house now only a blur of gray.

“It’s going to be all okay now!”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warm rays of light filtered through her closed eyelids, signalling the beginning of a new day. “Wake up!” Chirped a cheerful voice from the doorway. “It’s the day of the festival and you promised me we could go this year!”

Still blurry eyed, Dolores reluctantly sat up, the attacker’s vision slowly clearing up. Bundles of platinum gold curls cascaded past their shoulders and she looked straight into their bright hazel eyes, which were framed with long black eyelashes. “Alright, move Mnemosyne. Go put on your mask.”

“I don’t know why you care about the mask so much,” Mnemosyne pouted, her voice floating through the stuffy hallway. “But if this means I can go, I’ll do it.”

Dolores slid her laced gloves on her hands then looked at her dull reflection, delicately placing the black mask on the bridge of her nose. The image on the stained metal shifted and a toothy grin, similar to the Cheshire cat’s appeared. It opened and made a series of movements before a melodic like sound appeared, declaring only a few words, but enough to make Dolores freeze in shock.

“Tick-tock time’s mine, drip-drop you’ll stop.”

The deal. The seal she agreed to hundreds of years was soon coming to past.

“Sister?” Mnemosyne chorused, bringing Dolores back to reality. Taking a shaky step she made her way slowly downstairs.

“There you are!”

Mnemosyne giggled ecstatically and clasped her slender fingers around Dolores’s wrist before dragging her away.

“Good morning!” Mnemosyne greeted, waving and beaming at bored villagers passing by. In response they smiled back, but it didn’t last long when they spotted a sulking Dolores treading behind her. Grins turned to scowls and she could feel eyes burning holes through her head. Whispers emerged and Dolores watched the shadows giggle with glee.

“Darling,” a middle-aged mother whispered, covering her daughter’s bluebell eyes. “Don’t look at her. She’s a beast.”

She was often referred to as a beast but it didn’t mean it hurt less. Dolores was born right before the war, and the villagers, wanting to blame someone, picked her. So she was named the Lady of Sorrows.
Her sister on the other hand was loved and adored by the entire village. Born right after the war she was labelled Lady of Joy, for supposedly “ending” the war.

“Dolly,” Mnemosyne frowned, shaking the hem of her blouse warily. “Why is the bird not moving?”
Dolores turned and a small parakeet, the size of a small rock lay lifeless on the ground, its eyes frozen and empty.

“Is it dead?” Choked Mnemosyne, tears welling. Dolores quickly hid the bird in a nearby barrel, before tapping her mask discreetly. A monotone voice began to speak in her mind. “Remove recent memory?”
“Yes,” Dolores replied solemnly. “She must remain innocent.”

Small glimmers of light appeared and Mnemosyne’s scrunched up expression became relaxed, before she opened her eyes and let out a confused noise, similar to a grunt.

“Let’s go!” Dolores beckoned, plastering a quick smile on her face.

They began to make their way to the carnival before a sudden twist of discomfort stopped Dolores in her tracks.

Dolores felt the panic creep into her abdomen and she doubled over in pain, her knuckles turning white as she let out a silent scream of searing pain. Tension grew in her face and limbs, her expression became one of pure terror and agony. Her breathing grew shallow and salty tears slowly seeped through the cracks on the stone floor as she fell.

“Dolly? Dolly!” Mnemosyne screamed, attracting the attention of nearby villagers. “What’s happening? Someone help me, please!”

Everyone watched on uncomfortably before someone silently picked up Dolores, beckoning Mnemosyne to follow him.

He led her to a humble cottage which crouched low in the grassy embankment, as though it was trying to hide, but the distorted wood roof could not go unnoticed. Mnemosyne winced as he threw Dolores onto the couch, before turning to face her.

“Mnemosyne Sinclair,” he chuckled, his eyes bloodshot and his teeth stained with alcohol. “I’m sure you know about the horrors of this world?”

“What horrors?” Mnemosyne wondered, tilting her head.

“Of course you wouldn’t know. You see,” he replied, plucking the white mask from her. “This thing here was designed to keep you as a naïve sweet girl.”

“What do you mean?” She asked, her lip quivering. “Why is Dolly doing that?”

“She stole all your bad memories, leaving your soul pure while hers even more tainted then before,” he tutted. “Now she has to give the side of her deal. Her soul is mine and you’ll live on forever.”

“But I don’t want that,” Mnemosyne sobbed, fat drops of tears rolling down her cheeks. “I want her to come back. What can I do?”

He considered her offer, before a tentative smile appeared on his face. “Oh darling girl, how about this?”

Whispering an offer into her ear he watched as she eagerly nodded.

“If all it takes is my soul, I’ll do it!” Mnemosyne beamed, as she held her still sister.

Dolores woke up with a white mask on her face.
